"5-htp and breastfeeding toddler" , Mon 10 May 19:43

I have just today begun to take 5-htp and I wonder if it will have a negative effect on my 18.5 month old daughter who is still nursing about 2 times a day( bedtime)

I have taken Lexapro about a year ago but gave up on it 5 months ago, Didnt feel it was working and felt "out of sorts" a lot of the time.

I am taking htp cus I feel i Have so much irritability, depression and anxiety and I dont cope very well.

Anyone know how this effects breastmilk???!!???

It was fine for me to take the Lexapro while nursing my OB said so and so did my Daughters pediatrician.....

HELP PLEASE!

Hello...I was wondering how it was going since you started taking the 5-HTP? Are you still nursing?
I have a 7month old....and would like to start taking this supplement again...I had taken it for 3 years prior to this pregnancy.
I have just recently started to experience some anxiety and also just started my period (yeah)but I have been truly wanting to start taking it asap. My doc is fine with offering me rx like zoloft and prosac, and is understanding about why I don't want those....and he agrees that he wishes there was more research on the safety.
Any hoo, was just curious if you had noticed any changes in the little one, perhaps in sleep patterns or anything else?!
Have a great day...

I'm not a doctor, but if you're worried about 5htp,you could try l-tryptophan.They put it in baby food,so it seems to be safe to use if you're nursing.Of course always check with your Doc.

If l-tryptophan is safe, why wouldn't 5htp be safe?
