Topic Title: 5htp dosage question- DUPONT?

Anyone is welcome to answer my question..just know you know lots about it Dupont...here is my dilemma. At first I started off at 50 grams 2x a day and I slept perfectly for two weeks then it just stopped working and I felt very cloudy headed...I think maybe my body had had enough and didnt need so much. So I took a long break.
Now I started again but this time with a much smaller dose of 20 grams a day. 10 grams twice a day. Once at around 6pm and once around 11pm..( I go to bed around 3am) I found that when I take 10 grams of 5htp - it knocks me out. I get SOO sleepy I have to take a nap for about 30minutes...so would you say that means that I should stay with this dose? I found that I began sleepingi longer and without awakening as much-lots of dreams- but the quality of my sleep was probably not TOO deep because I'd wake up EXTREMELY tired. I'm wondering if I should stay at this 20 grams a day dose to see if it eventually gives me better sleep over time..or whether I should lower the dose ( since it makes me really drowsy at only 20 grams a day) or whether I should raise the dose? At your dose , did you find that it still made you sleepy when you took it and for how long. And did it fix you over time...or instantly? You said the fatigue will eventually go away...do you find that its because the quality of sleep improves?

I'm assuming you mean mg and not grams...that would be a very high dose.
I think If 10 mg is working best for you, you should stick with it. As your body adjusts to the dose the fatigue should lessen. 5htp increases the serotonin available in the brain, and that is what causes the vivid dreams. From my experience the foggy thinking is more related to the depression than the 5htp. I had to WORK at overcoming depression for a good 2 years, it was not instant. I think I suffered from low-serotonin and by taking 5htp the serotonin stores in my body were replenished. Even today however I find that certain things delete my serotonin stores, like decongestants. When this happens I take 100 mg of 5htp and feel much better.

thanks for the reply! I was wondering...was insomnia ever a part of your depression ? and If so..did the 5 htp take care of it? Thats the main reason I'm taking it....I find that my sleep is NEVER deep because I wake up with my eyes hurting.

I cried all the time, had a hard time getting out of bed, lots of social anxiety, wanted to die, brain fog, weight gain, irriatable, short tempered, feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, feeling trapped and unbloved/unlovable, but I don't remember insomnia. Of course my kids were a lot younger then and sleeping through the night was a commodity. I often took naps in the afternoon with them. I'm pretty sure my depression started off as post partum and proceeded to get worse from other medications and circumstances.
If low serotonin isn't the problem for you there are other alternatives that may work. 5htp is great for insomnia, but have you ever tried Melatonin. It is the sleep hormone. Maybe you don't need the serotonin just the melatonin that 5htp supplies to the brain. It's worth a try.

ok..I have all those symptoms you had too...although alot of them are due to my insomnia..my insomnia makes me depressed..but I had issues before that too...also, about melatonin...I read somewhere that it can exacerbate feelings of depression..so I dont think I want to go that route..but I am curious about my dosage. I was wondering....when you found the right dosage for you..did it give you sleeping problems? for a few days? The thing is...The current dose I'm taking lets me sleep normally..I'm wondering..if maybe I need to up the dose to where it causes sleeping iproblems and anxiety for 5 days...to know its working? you know?

From the information I have, 5htp is safe in doses up tp 900 mg. You are taking a very low dose, so if you want to take a higher dose go for it, you can always cut back if you don't like the way you feel. Hopefully, it will help.
