Hi I'm here. Hey I've been using 5htp for a couple of weeks now to help with my diet. However, I can only tolerate 100mg's twice daily. Any more and I become really short of breath and experience some mild muscle twitching. Unfortunately this small dose doesn't do much to curb my carb cravings. So here's my question. Would adding sjw to the mix be helpful or even safe? Any ideas, anybody?

I was taking 5-HTP & St John's Wort together for about three months but had to stop the 5-HTP because of stomach problems. I was only taking 50mg a day but it seemed to help somewhat...
I would be VERY careful about taking higher doses of 5-HTP. From what you describe of muscles twitching it sounds like a case of serotonin sydrome- where the brain is flooded with excess serotonin- not a good thing apparently! If you try the St John's together with 5-HTP try low doses to minimise the risk of too much serotonin. It may be worth checking out the herb Rhodiola Rosea (Arctic Root) instead.

Hope that helps
Dan

You Go Dan!!!
I tried rhodiola rosea. It really works! And with no side affects. Thanx for the input. I not only have a significantly decreased appetite but it really improves my mood and my overall sense of well-being!

Hiya -

it all depends on how you react to the sjw. When I first went on sjw, I lost some weight as I had zero appetite. But then it did send me a bit manic as well, which meant I had insomnia (don't worry, most people have the opposite - great sleep with it). If you want to try sjw, and I did with 5htp as well, start off with a low dose to see how you react. I know that everyone tells you to take the 900mg daily to get effects, but not everyone is the same - I certainly did well building up my dose very very gradually. In fact in the beginning I couldn't tolerate more than one 300mg capsule daily otherwise it would send my neurotransmitters into overdrive and I would become hyper. Obviously this was just my reaction, and most people say it makes them sleepy so they take it at night.

So it might work - give it a go I say.

Thanx Loops,
I did try a 325mg dose of sjw today. But I still haven't taken my morning dose of 5htp. I'm a little bit chicken I guess. Does sjw strengthen the effectivness of 5htp? Or does it just do its own thing? The shortness of breath thing is pretty scarey.

Hiya -

when you get the shortness of breath, do you feel anxious as well?

You know you can take a really low dose of 5-htp and it can still be effective - like 25mg. Some people have done well with this kind of dose.

It sounds pretty serious - you don't want that kind of side-effect so I'd try an even lower dosage like the one above.

By the way I've recently started taking a good potent brand of 5-htp again, and the first few days I felt a bit anxious and edgy, but I stuck with it because my insomnia is very bad and dosages of 300-400mg a day for me is the only way I can sort it out.

Now I'm on my 5th day, I am feeling a bit fatigued and worn out with zero anxiety, but I have been sleeping comparatively well, so I am willing to trade that for the benefits I'm getting. For me there is nothing worse than insomnia and resorting to benzos, which ultimately are going to destroy my ability to sleep in the long run.

So 5-htp might make you feel a bit anxious to start with, but this soon wears off as the serotonin levels go up in your brain (I assume). If your shortness of breath is anxiety-related, this might be it, but if not, yes, I would treat the 5-htp with a lot of caution.

Good luck

Loops

You know what, I just quit the 5htp altogether. The side affects seemed too dangerous. I guess it just wasn't for me.

You were taking too much 5htp. You should try 10 mg. That will work guaranteed. If you take a little bit..it makes you relax and curbs your appetite. But if you take too much it only exacerbates anxiety. So I take 5-10 mg and I can feel the calming effects.

Where do they sell a 10mg pill? The smallest dose I've ever seen was 50mg.
