Topic Title: Wellbutrin vs 5-HTP
| | "Wellbutrin vs 5-HTP" , Mon 22 Mar 19:09
Hi, I've been taking 300 mg Wellbutrin sr for over a year and have started having this "shocking" feeling that zings up my spine and into my head. Very strange. Anyway I am interested in switching to 5-HTP (which I'm sure my dr would advise against as he is very much against natural supplements). My questions is how do I do this? Do I need to stop taking the Wellbutrin first? I've tried to quit taking Wellbutrin before and when I've been off for about a week I have serious depression/anxiety. The symptoms include not being able to stop crying, unreasonable anger, panic attacks, exhaustion, headaches, etc. I have chronic depression with severe acute episodes and tend to go through manic & depressive periods. Any suggestions? I don't know if I should just live with the shocking feeling, but also the medication seems to be helping less.
Thank you so much!

Maybe you should look for a doctor that is informed in both natural and conventional medicine and have them help you wean yourself off of the wellbutrin. Weaning yourself could be dangerous. Surfingramma

Wellbutrin can have some very strange side effects. It made me feel schizophrenic and very sad. I believe that Wellbutrin only works on dopamine. 5-Htp and tryptophan both increase serotonin production, so I don't see any problem with quitting Wellbutrin and taking 5-htp. I have heard of people taking both together.

Well, I'm not a doctor, but know that going off anti-depressants often causes the symptoms you described. Either way you have to get off the Welbutrin very slowly. for example I was on 150 mg of Zoloft and so I went down to 100 at first for a week, then 50 for a week, ( I even went down to 25 mg a week by cutting it in quarters.) and then off it completely. Just get a pill cutter if you need to. You will probably still suffer the same side effects but a lot less powerful. I know that when I had to get off of Lexapro it had already sent me into panic attacks and depression, so when my doctor took me off of it she gave me a prescription for Klonopin for the anxiety with no refills. I guess it's addictive, so even though she told me to take it three times a day I only took it when I had to have it. Mybe once or at the most twice a day. It made life much easier! I really feel for you. I know it's not fun.
