Topic Title: 5HTP and SSRI similar side effects????
| | "5HTP and SSRI similar side effects????" , Sat 20 Mar 12:57
Hi. I am hoping someone may be able to answer a question I have. I'm wondering about the likelyhood that I could have the same reaction to 5htp as I did Zoloft and Lexapro. My doctor prescribed Lexapro for some mild anxiety / stress. Well a month later I was having panic attacks and for a while could hardley leave my house. I had never in my life experienced anything like this. They gave me Klonopin to help me get over the Zoloft and then put me on Zoloft. The panic eased up a bit, but them a month after starting Zoloft I went into a very deep depression for a couple of weeks until I weaned myself off it. It's now about 5 months later and I'm much better but still have that nagging dread following me around some days. I am terrified to get back on any prescription, but had ehard that 5 htp is a great alternative. But has anyone heard that if you have these kinds of side effects with SSRI's that you are likey to have them with 5htp??? I REALLY would appreciate any info.

From my personal experience with 5-HTP (admittedly limited), you can have similar side effects but they're much milder. It's like the difference between a tiny rock hammer and a sledgehammer... they both do the same thing (hammer stuff in) but... well anyways... :).

Well, like I said it's taken me a long time to get over the Lexapro and Zoloft, so after a ride like that I almost feel like I'll never be me again. So I'm still kind of going through the mild stuff. I guess It's just a general feeling of anxiousness and my heart had never stopped those peiods of trying to beat out of my chest. It'll just seem to stop sometimes and I'll get light headed, but my heart checked out fine a few months ago, so....???? I just want my edge back. My zest for life. But I don't want to go back to where I came from on the prescription meds. I also want to drop about 30 pounds and can't seem to find the strength or will to do it. That alone is depressing. I guess I'm just wondering if anyone got on the prescriptions, had problems, got off then got on 5 HTP and had the same problems all over again.???????? I'm really desperate for a change here.

You didn't say whether you've tried SJW or not... have you ever tried it? For me, it's been the most effective of anything I've tried (5-HTP and Sam-e being the others). I mean it really works well for depression and panic, with few side effects compared to SSRI antidepressants.

Well, I did use sjw, but only for about a week, because I hit another low and thought it may be the reason. From what I've been told it works like an ssri and since those are definately not for me I decided to try the 5htp. I actually did start taking 5htp this week and I actaully think I'm feeling better because of it. I do get a little dizzy sometimes, and my ears rung one day a little bit but hope that these things will pass with time (????)

The side effects should subside as your body adjusts to the 5htp. Sometimes an increase in Serotonin can cause anxiety. If 5htp doesn't help you may need something like Relora, Sam-e or some of the other amino acids that increase different nuerotransmitters other than serotonin. The ssri's increase serotonin, but remeron is not a ssri, and I don't know about Lexapro. But I haven't heard anything good about it. I hope the 5htp helps.
