I see that several websites now sell pharmaceutical grade tryptophan. Is it now legal in the U.S.? I have heard that it is much more effective than 5-htp for many people

I believe it has been available under prescription only for a while but only recently restored to over the counter status. I live in Australia where it is prescription only so I'm ordering some from the States over the net. I tried 5-HTP which helped (with fairly strong anxiety and mild depression) but gave me major stomach problems) Here's a couple of articles with good info on tryptophan:
