My sister has been taking 5htp since November. She started with 50mg a day and now takes 100mg. Lately she has been waking up in the night startled for no apparent reason. Sometimes she has the sensation that someone is in her room (she's in college). This is affecting her sleep. Has anyone heard of 5htp causing this? I have been on 5htp for awhile and have nothing like this but meds affect everyone differently. I find it strange that she would start having an adverse reaction out of the blue after 2 months and think something else might be the cause. But I just wanted to ask others who have experience with 5htp. What do you think? Thanks!

I have used for 5htp for about a year now, and can tell you that around a month of taking it there starts to be a slight rebound effect 4-6 hours after taking it. The rebound effect is a feeling of a lack of 5htp in the body. Some anxiety but a fear would also make aense to me. a similiar type of feeling is felt also around 4 hours after taking vitamin b6. During the day this feeling seems to be short lived, but at night it seems to disrupt the sleep for a significant period of time. The only solution that I have found is to take another dose of 5 htp upon awaking in the middle of the night. Perhaps try splitting the dose and take half of it at the start and the other half in the middle of the night. You can also try swithing to inosital this is a B vitamin which is sold in health food stores. However, a 1 or 2 months after taking it a similiar problem might start up again as the body learns to digest it quicker. Maybee try rotating over time between 5htp and inosital although I don't know if this would work.

I have been trying 5htp for about 3 weeks. Sometimes, I will wake up during the night quite abruptly, and feel unexpectedly anxious. In the morning I often awake feeling nauseous...and with the feeling of a tight band around my head. Can't say it's a headache, but definitely not a nice feeling. I am wondering if others have experienced this. Am ready to quit 5htp altogether although I have heard such positive results?

I HAVE BEEN TAKING 5HPT FOR ALMOST A WEEK AND I HAVE EXPERIENCED THE TIGHT BAND FEELING AROUND MY HEAD AND INCREASED ENVERGY. I COMES & GOES. I HAVE HAD BAD REACTIONS TO MEDICATIONS IN THE PAST AND AM VERY CAUTOUS. I SEEM TO BE VERY SENSITIVE TO MEDICATION SO I STARTED BY CUTTING THE TABLETS. I AM STARTING WITH APPROXIMATELY 3 ML IN THE MORNING. I AM TAKING IT WITH FOOD BECAUSE I HAVE A SENSITIVE STOMACHE. MAYBE THAT WOULD HELP YOUR NAUSEA. OR MAYBE TAKING IT AT A DIFFERENT TIME MIGHT HELP. OR LOWER YOUR DOSAGE. HANG IN THERE.

These same effects happened to me with an SSRI antidepressant (which I quit taking), trouble falling asleep then waking up abruptly in a mad panic... so they could be common with increased serotonin.

Vivid dreams do occur while taking 5htp and some other anti-depressants as well.
