Topic Title: does protein interfere with 5-htp absorbtion?
| | "does protein interfere with 5-htp absorbtion?" , Tue 16 Dec 15:19
i know tryptophan is best taken away from protein foods, and preferably with a carbohydrate snack, because the other amino acids compete with it for absorbtion by the brain. but does anyone know if the same is true for 5=htp? im on lowcarb diet, so i wanted to know if this would interfere with 5-htp effectiveness

5-HTP does not rely on the same mechanism as amino acids for absorbtion, so it can be taken with or without food.

Hi Jimmy-
There seems to be a lack of consensus on this question. Yes, people who take other amino acids like phenylalanine and tyrosine are advised to take them on an empty stomach and at least about 30-60 minutes before starting a meal. I've seen some information advising the same guidelines for taking 5-HTP. Yet in the case of 5-HTP I've also come across information saying either that it is a better competitor for absorption than other amino acids or that it for some reason doesn't have to compete the same way some other amino acids do. Natrol, one of the brands that seems to be popular and reliable, actually says on the bottle to take it with a meal. Personally I have tried taking my 5-HTP on an empty stomach an hour before a meal, and I have also tried taking it with a meal, and in my case I cannot feel any difference. So who knows. Perhaps you could try both ways and see if one works better for you than the other. Best wishes.
