Topic Title: 5-HTP not for me
| | "5-HTP not for me" , Sun 7 Dec 13:41
I tried 5-HTP after reading through this forum and blancing out the good and bad points that I read. Unfortunatly it was'nt for me.. I got really bad acne on my face and felt physicaly exhausted all the time. Also had a constant dull headache. I have been taking SJW for months with really positive results but was still struggling with my sleep pattern which is what prompted me to try 5-HTP. Glad that it works for some of you guys, sad it didd'nt for me, and thankful that i have SJW to fall back on.

really? i actually stopped taking sjw in fear of the acne side effect. i didn't read anything about 5htp causing acne - god i hope not! maybe it was a long term side effect from sjw? anyways, i'm glad you've still got the sjw to fall back on. i've found the 5htp works but the last few days i've felt a little flat - but that's so much better than with no help at all! if you're having trouble sleeping, try melatonin. it works wonders - best to take it on an empty stomach before bedtime. if you get really vivid and bad dreams on it, simply cut down your dosage. i experienced this for ages until i worked out i was taking too much. now i take a quarter of a 3mg tab each night - and it works just fine with no nightmares!

Its the other way round for me. Hav'nt read anywhere that SJW causes acne but have read others with experience of spots on 5-htp on this forum! Anyone else any experience of spots (pimples i think in the USA ;o) ) on either of these? God I hope it is'nt the SJW, it has changed my life, but as a single 32yr old woman I could'nt cope with these spots for always. They're not just your average, they are nasty big ones and lots of them :o(

Just done a search on Acne in this forum, and looks like i got myself all confused (nothing new there then!) Seems there are experiences of acne on SJW and not on 5-htp. Maybe I ought to stop the SJW and give the 5-htp another try. Seems that some have got past the bad side effects of 5-htp by perservering. Any comments on any of this anyone?

I used 5htp for 2 years without any acne, and SJW always gave me a headache. If you are going to use just 5htp and stop taking sjw you will need a higher dose of 5htp than the one you were taking in combination with SJW.

I was one of the people who got severe acne from St. John's wort. I got rash-like acne on my back and face, including painful cyst-like lumps that took forever to go away. I also experienced hair loss.
I'm not currently taking St. John's wort, but my doctor told me to take extra zinc and selenium to counteract hair loss side effects to drugs. I noticed that since I've upped my zinc, I'm losing less hair. Zinc and selenium are supposed to also be related to skin health, so maybe you could try the extra zinc and selenium and see if this helps.

Is that considered an allergic reaction?

On Dr. Amen's site, he says that he notices an increase in acne in those who take St. John's wort, so I guess this can at least be a side effect - not sure if it's an allergic reaction.

I read somewhere, maybe the iHerb.com encyclopedia, that melatonin should not be taken if you have any depression. Anybody ever hear this? Any comments?

I'm fairly sure that I've read somewhere(many years ago, perhaps in Norman Rosenthal's book Winter Blues), one of the theories for the reason people have Seasonal Affective Disorder(winter depression, SAD's), is because their bodies produces too much melatonin. So, I've personally stayed away from it.

Yes-that was my experience! I took Melatonin for insominia (and nothing else ie; no other supplements day or night) for a month straight, and got more and more depressed; could not stop crying etc. Then I read that Melatonin can aggravate clinical depression! (Valerian also) I stopped Melatonin and got the depression at least out of the hysterical range! Whew! It happened slowly and those of us clinically depressed may be so happy to sleep, that they don't realize that the Melatonin was slowly bringing you down, down, down..I'd be careful.
