Topic Title: 5-HTP w/ L-tyrosine or SAM-e or what?
| | "5-HTP w/ L-tyrosine or SAM-e or what?" , Tue 11 Nov 20:29
hi there: i suffer from anxiety, muscle-tension, headaches, fatigue, insomnia (including waking up too early), and mood swings, and i'm looking for help. i've used paxil, prozac, and serzone, but still had anxiety attacks, not to mention, those nasty side-effects on the mojo. i've heard about using sam-e, 5-htp, 5-htp w/ L-tyrosine, and a combination of them all, but don't really know what might be best for me. if anyone has any suggestions, i'd be really grateful. currently, i self-medicate with both xanax and alcohol, and i realize that way lies addiction, and so desperately want to find a more effective and less dangerous solution. thanks for your help, missm

Personally,If I were you I would look into trying L-Tryptophan instead of 5-htp along with a good quality St Johns Wort(Perika brand) or maybe Tyrosine with st johns wort. Here's a good site for information www.healthrecovery.com/biochemical_depression.html

thank you for your reply. i need to clarify, though. depression isn't my main issue. it's more like a side-effect of the anxiety, tension, and insomnia. i think i just get exhausted into depression, if that makes sense... also - i heard that 5-htp was preferable to tryptophan due to the latter being a bit dangerous. is that incorrect? thanks again, missm

L-tryptophan is totally safe. There was some concern many years ago about the safety of tryptophan because of a contaminated batch from a japanese manufacturor caused many people to become ill.The cause was the contaminant not the Tryptophan.I'm not knocking 5-htp,it works well for some.My only concern is how it is utilized in the body once it hits the bloodstream. Also I've used Tyrosine at 500mg twice a day for anxiety and sluggishness with great effect. Some say it could increase anxiety but the opposite was true for me.A good B complex is also an excellent start,be sure that it contains niacinamide rather than plain niacin as niacinamide is excellent for anxiety and tension.

ok, first off - thanks SO MUCH for all your info. i really appreciate you taking the time to educate me.
now, more questions! ;)
1. didn't someone say that using L-tyrosine and/or 5-HTP in combination with B vitamins cancels out the effects? or am i incorrect? 2. do you know how 5-HTP w/ L-Tyrosine works in combination with SAM-e? or even, what SAM-e is supposed to be good for all on its own? 3. you mentioned that you don't like how 5-HTP is utilized in the body once it hits the bloodstream - what do you mean by this?
again, thanks so much for your time and generosity.

1)Someone may have said this, but in my experience L-tyrosine along with a Bvitamin complex works really well for me.As far as 5-htp with the Bvitamins go, this is where my concern lies.Refer to the health recovery site I posted above for an in depth explanation.Just scroll down until you see the article on 5-htp. 2)Sam-e is known to increase dopamine as well as serotonin and is an excellent antidepressant with little effect on anxiety, although I've heard it worked on anxiety as well for some people.I take Tyrosine and Tryptophan as well as 400mg Sam-e with good effect.I'm also thinking about adding st johns wort to the mix. 3)Refer to the above post.
Hope this helps.

hey there:
so, i bought L-Tyrosine (w/ L-Glutamine), 900mg of each in a capsule, as well as enteric coated 5-HTP (100mg), and here's what happened: day 1 - took 2 capsules L-Tyr in AM and PM, and then again (total 5400 mg) with 2 capsules of 5-HTP (200mg) at bedtime. very happy feeling, but also VERY manic feeling. day 2 - took three caps L-Tyr (total 2700mg) in AM, and 2 caps 5-HTP (200mg) bedtime. still kind of manic. day 3 - took 2 caps L-Tyr (total 1800 mg) and 1 cap 5-HTP in AM, and 1 cap 5-HTP (total 200mg) at bedtime. still pretty manic all day. had to take valerian root, kava tea, and finally a bloody xanax to come down.
do you think it's the L-Tyrosine that's making me so manic? is it not the correct thing for anxiety? that's my basic problem that i'm trying to fix with these supplements - anxiety and insomnia (which leads to irritability and muscle tension, etc...)
thanks a lot for your help,
missm

Yeah,it sounds to me like you're getting too much Tyrosine. The Tyrosine works on dopamine and norepinephrine the energizing neurotransmitters. You may want to drop the Tyrosine and stick to the 5 htp.
