Topic Title: Newbie has questions

Hello all. I've recently managed to come off SEROXAT (Paxil) by reducing it very slowly over a long period using the liquid version and a baby medicine measuring syringe. It was v. difficult indeed.
I started taking 5HTP three days ago. SEROTONE 100mg with a banana before bed. I've got a bad headache and today I feel/look quite flushed in the face. I have noticed that it is taking me longer to get to sleep. I've also been weeing more than usual!
SEROTONE includes 30mg Niacin (maybe this is causing the flushing???) and 10mg Vitamin B6 aldong with folic acid, biotin and zinc.
I'm also taking B-Complex, Essential Fatty Acids, Beta Carotene, and Essential Anti-oxidants. But I take these in the morning with breakfast. From some posts, I can see that maybe I should cut the B-COMPLEX out entirely.
I can see that there are a lot of different approaches in terms of timing/dosages/combinations and I'd be very greatful if someone would take the time to enlighten me a little. I'm not suffering from clinical depression, but do feel a little 'low' and am prone to getting anxious. Hwever, I AM going through a geniunely stressful period of divorce/business breakdown/house sale/financial freefall, etc, which is enough to make anyone a bit anxious! I'm in good health, eat a healthy diet, cycle a lot, am a healthy weight for my height and practice meditation.
I really appreciate anyone who has some tips for me - when I was coming off Seroxat the on-line user group for it was a GODSEND!

Hey Newbie--- By no stretch of the imagination do I pretend to have a lot of advice, I've only been taking 5-htp for approx. 1 week. I can say I've read a lot on line and in books and from what I've seen I don't think you should be doing the vitamin B thing. As for not for falling asleep.......I'm having the opposite problem. Sleep is all I want to do. I haven't had any headhaches and so far I think it's really helping me, other than feeling really tired. I also read that taking 5-htp is on an empty stomach is better. When you take it at bedtime, skip the banana and see if that helps at all. Is there a special reason you take it with a banana? Anyway, I don't know if any of this is useful to you.............but I wish you the best of luck. I'm kind of like you, no clinical depression, just anxious and feeling low. the last 3 years have been really difficult.....lost my father, miscarriage, mom-lost-it, sold childhood home, shut down a business and had to go back to working for someone else. Thank God I have a wonderful husband, but it all has truly taken it's toll.
Wishing you the best.......... Snuffles :-)

Thanks Snuffles. The bottle recommended taking it at bedtime with a carbohydrate snack, so that's why I tried the banana. Having read a bit more about 5-HTP I have found that in some unusual cases (ie ME!!) it can cause insomnia. So I've played around with taking it at different times of day and first thing in the morning seems best. On a totally empty stomach it gives me wind/bloating/burps! Not very attractive. Yesterday I tried taking 50mg at breakfast and 50mg at about 4pm and that was OK, but still got some abdominal discomfort. Today I tried 100mg at breakfast and 100mg after lunch and so far so good - just a few little burps and not to much tummy pain. Anyone who has any info on how to avoid the stomach side effects please let me know!! Thanks. Jody x

Hey Jody--- I switched to taking mine at night after dinner. still 100 miligrams. taking it at night has helped w/the tummy yucks!! Taking it with food has also helped. I was told to take it on an empty stomach for better absorption, but the effects are still the same without the upset tummy. It still makes me tired, but with taking it at night at least I'm going to bed. It's been almost 2 weeks and I feel like it's really helping. Good luck to you. I hope your new switch will work for you.

Try switching to a brand that is enteric coated and you shouldn't have the stomach upset. I recommend Nature's way Brand of 5htp with b6 & c.

Just my 2 cents here, but it couold be very well the niacin in the 5htp. It makes a lot of people flush or get hot feelings. The b-complex is probably fine. I take a B 100-vit complex that has inositol in it. I take 5htp, and 900 mg of SJW. I have not experienced any wierd effects at all. But I take them at staggered times. I take 50mg 5htp at 8am, then my vitamins and other stuff at 10 am, and my SJW all at one time with another 50 mg of 5htp at bedtime as well as 1000mg GABA. I do all this for my anxiety problems. I am a lot better and have been doing it for 6 weeks. The only thing I's suggest is since you already take a b-complex, I'd just get straight 5htp with no extra b-vits. I use Natrol brand found at Walmart. Hope this helps. Missigus
