Apologies to the men for this one. Also apologies generally for asking yet another question. I have done a search on the net and been through the entire archive on this site but can't find anything so have to ask.
I have been taking 50 mg 5htp for 2 days now and the effect on my anxiety has been dramatic. However I have started having flushes again and a bizarre prickling of the skin as with the menopause. I wonder if 5htp somehow lowers estrogen levels ? I appreciate this is an unusual question but have any of you ladies noticed an effect on your hormones ?
Hope everyone is well.
Sue

After 3 days of being on 5-HTP soley (I dropped the SJW) and it has been dramatic for me...I'm actually sleeping until the alarm wakes me..but I have noticed occasionally a feeling of a flush, doesn't last long, but this was certainly not occuring before the 5-HTP. Anyone else have similar experiences?? I am not concerned, I am too happy at this point with the results. Since I have been on anti-depressants for years and the possiblibty of being weaned off of them is too good a thing to be concerned over some minor flushing (compared to the side effects of the prescribed meds). If there is niacin in the product that is most probably the cause. I have taken niacin in the past and aside from the flusing you get that prickling feeling, which is due to the capillaries being opened during tha rush of blood at skin level.
I do hope Sue, that you are finding the 5-HTP is continuing with the positive results.

Throughout a woman's life we seem to be most affected by the delicate balance between estrogen and progesterone.
There seems to be overwhelming evidence that estrogen effects serotonin levels, but not the other way around.
Progesterone also affects feelings of well-being. It's the parent hormone for stress hormones, so when you are stressed, you have even less of it. The delicate balance between these hormones -- estrogen and progesterone -- is critical. They have complementary and opposing effects on mood, with serotonin being a mood elevator and progesterone being a natural relaxant.
