"Which: 5-HTP or SAM-e ??" , Fri 26 Sep 19:19

Hi all,

I'm currently on a very small dose of Paxil for depression (10mg) and would like to ween off and instead go onto a more natural remedy such as SAM-e or 5-HTP or SJW (though I think that the last may be too mild for me). My depression, for the last 12 years has been generally mild, except for one incident, two years ago, when it got very bad, at which time I went on the Paxil. I also have difficulty falling asleep.

The reason I would like to ween off of the paxil is because 1) I my health insurance does not cover the cost and I'm a student and 2) I would prefer to take something less synthetic, more natural. 3) don't like the thought of unresearched long term health effects of an SSRI.

Right now I have researched SAM-e and it seemed to be a good substitute. But what about the 5-HTP? Has anyone tried both? (not at the same time of course) and if so, which one would be better for me?

Very grateful for your input,
Citygyrl

I have tried all of the above at some point and had varying degrees of success. Here's what I thought...

SJW: Very good, deffinitely works. ..but unfortunately takes a long time to work (6 weeks to start for me) and you need to take it over a long period (personally I think at least 3 months) to really see the difference.

5-HTP: This stuff didn't really agree with me. It triggered some severe anxiety and I couldn't take it for more than a few days. (To be fair though it doesn't take a lot to trigger my anxiety so get a second opinion!) - not for me this one.

SAM-e: This also deffinitely works, and quickly! Within a matter of hours I felt better (not great of course, just better). I'm in no coubt it has heklped my depression but it too raises my anxiety levels a little. I'm currently pplaying with the dose to find how much makes me feel less depressed without triggering anxiety.

I am currently taking SJW and SAM-e together with some success (alhtough not quite enough yet, fingers crossed!). I've been on SJW 6 weeks and SAM for 1 week.

Good luck,

Adam.

I take 50mg of 5-htp at night and 200mg of SAM-E before breakfast and another 200mg of SAM-E before lunch.

I'm okay with taking both at different times of the day.

The 5-HTP helps me sleep and the SAM-E keeps me awake.
