I just found this site and am flooded with all the posts. I understand when one is taking 5-HTP you should be supplementing with B-12, B-6, and TMG to offset the creation of homeocysteine by the 5-HTP. The aforementioned supplements turn the homeocysteine BACK into the 5-HTP.
I started to experiement with 5-HTP and then stopped due to the warnings about it creating homeocysteine. Like I don't create enough of my own with all the stress I have daily!! I supplement with TMG for that reason (high stress in my life)
Input appreciated. I'm considering St Johns Wort instead.

welcome,
actually i think it's SAMe that you need to supplement w/ b's to prevent the buildup of homeocysteine...
there are some reports that the b vitamins cause the 5-HTP to convert to serotonin in the liver which means it doesn't effectively cross the blood brain barrior. i don't know how true this is but if you look around the forum i think the topic has come up more than once here.
in my opinion for either to be effective there should also be dietary adjustments. (enough protein, reduced carbs from sugars & white flours, enough fish oils & a good supplement program.)
hope that helps some :D ---------------------------------

I was late getting back to your kind reply, thinking we got email notification. You are right, it is SAMe that you need to balance with other supplementation. My mistake made me stop taking 5-HTP and switch to SJW, which for me, exacerbated my depression and anxiety and after 11 miserable days I came across a Doctor's article online that brought my mistake to light and I'm back on 5-HTP and am greatly improved. Thanks again.
