"5 HTP & Vitamin B6--Deadly combo?" , Mon 1 Sep 20:56

I just started taking 5HTP and thought I was doing great until I started reading about the possible ill-effects of 5HTP if taken with more than 5mg of Vitamin B6. The 5 HTP I purchased from a Real Foods store contains 10mg of B6. I have only been taking these for four days (one a day @ 50mg a pill) and am concerned that I might have done some ill to my health. Am I just being paranoid? I went to the store after reading all of these posts and some articles and bought Natrol's 5HTP, which does not contain any Vitamin B6. Why would Real Foods carry this supplement if there is a possibility of damaging the heart? Does anybody know if there has been any conclusive studies about the correlation between heart valve damage and 5HTP use?

From the following website:

http://www.erowid.org/smarts/tryptophan/tryptophan_info1.shtml

Okay, after more digging I can pretty comfortably say that out of the 3700 published papers in MEDLINE that mention 5-HTP, none of them links 5-HTP usage to heart spasms or cardiac arrest. In fact, to the contrary, there are studies that show a protective effect of 5-HTP against fibrillation. Search terms I used: "5-htp" + one of: "heart" "cardiac" "danger" "risk" "safety" "tolerance" "coronary" "spasm" "SD50"

The only studies that I can find that show serotonin causing coronary spasms are when high concentrations of serotonin are injected directly into the heart or one of its chambers, or when another drug or pre-existing syndrome made the heart hypersensitive to serotonin. My survey of this literature has not been as comprehensive, as there are many more papers.

In addition, studies at 800-900mg/day in humans have never found a life threatening or otherwise serious side-effect. Many mild side effects at these dosages have been found. After the dosage is decreased, they go away.

new here and just wanted to also ask a question. i did recall reading some material somewhere on b6 and 5htp when i started taking it.the information relayed that when taking more than 5 mg b6 with the 5htp it actually cancelled the effectivness of the 5htp and recomended waiting at least 6 to 8 hours before taking 5htp after the b6. i think it said that when the tow were combined it actually caused the 5htp to be absorbed and broken down in the digestive system instead of being carried to the brain system to be released and used efficiently. anyone else read this or know of it? just wondering. i will continue to consume my b vitamins early and taking the 5htp before bedtime. :) thanks lana

check the above link out, pretty scary and I just got a "PMS" combo that has B6 and 5htp, but it's only 5 mg. (why bother at all?)
