I am seeing a naturopathic MD. My goal is to eventually get off paxil. Been on it for several years. He wants to start me on 50 mgs per night of 5HTP. I asked kim about taking paxil with 5HTP. He said not a problem since my serotonin is so low. Eventually after a few months he would like to increase 5HTP and decrease paxil. Just wondered what others thought of this.

Also talked of putting me on something that contained Kava. That I am leary of. Any advice?

I actually did exactly what you're doing. It is perfectly alright to take a bit of 5htp while weaning off paxil. You might want to read up on symptoms of serotonin syndrome just in case, but if you only take a little bit, it should be ok. I must say that I didn't have a great deal of success with 5htp, though I know it works wonders for some. Just be sure you have a back up plan. I'm now taking a bit of Zoloft (which I find much more tolerable in the side effects realm than Paxil and is easier to get off of) and adding Rhodiola to see what it'll do. I've also had a good experience with Gaba when feeling anxious, so you might try that if there's an anxiety component to work with. As for Kava, why are you scared? I've never heard anything bad about it. It seems like a good herb, though perhaps I am ignorant of certain facts.
