Topic Title: How to figure out good doseage

I just started taking 5-HTP 2 days ago. I started by taking 50 mg 3 times a day before each meal. The bottle says daily dosage is 1 cap/day??? I've been reading up on this and have read some reports where as much as 900 mg was taken daily for appetite control. Found another website where someone said 50 mg 3 times a day before each meal was enough to keep their appetite under control. I know we are all different and have to find what works for us. I guess I am just a bit anxious to get this working for me. I have depression and also a big problem with compulsive eating especially at night. How long should I stay at a lower dose to see if it works before upping it. I felt more lucid and calmer yesterday but still had no control over my snacking. I dont think I could ever handle having to take a whole 900 mgs a day. It was hard enough finding 5-HTP on the shelves at a Walmart and they only had 50 mg caps and it was a bottle of only 45...I would have to buy 20 bottles...lol.

Hi there. I suffer from compulsive overeating as well, and am a card carrying member of Overeaters Anonymous. I put on about 28lbs over an 8 year period whilst on Seroxat (Paxil). I've been totally off the SSRI now for 2 months (although it took 9 months to reduce my dosage from 20mg to Zero). I started taking 5HTP about 10 days ago for mild depression/anxiety and have found it much easier to stick to my planned menus and not to snack. My portion sizes have got smaller and I can resist the carbs/sugars much more easily. I take 100mg in the morning, and I'm experimenting with 100mg in the afternoon as well. I don't take it at night as it keeps me awake (contrary girl that I am!!). I didn't know about the appetite supressant qualities of 5HTP, so I'm really pleased. My improved mood is supported by my higher quality diet, so the two feedback on each other nicely. I'm not very overweight, but I feel so horribly out of control when I live to eat, rather than eat to live, so this is a wonderful side effect. Jody x

I started taking it as the bottle recommended, same as you, one 50mg a day. I didn't really notice any change mood or appetite wise. When I went to one 100mg dose I noticed the appetite change. Felt full faster and it was easy to stop eating. Also my compulsive nightime snacking disappeared. My sweet and carb craving are almost non-existant and I also don't crave alcohol like I used to. You might try 50mg 3xday for a week then try 100mg 2x which is what I'm currently taking, a.m. and p.m. This will allow your body an adjustment period.

Good to see you have a sence of humour about it, good on you. I take 5-HTP, I used to take 100mg at night and now only need 50mg at night. I found that it definately does have an effect on my appetite even though that is not what I take it for. If I was you I would experiment a little with the 5-HTP to see what does work for you.
I use Natures Way everyone raves about it being the best brand so maybe it would be a good idea to try that brand.
If that doesn't work maybe you could try taking up smoking that suppresses your appetite. Only joking don't take up smoking it's bad for you.
Maybe you could try having a 5-HTP when you feel like a snack.
I hope you succeed in your venture.
God bless,
Misch

You should try going to a health food store instead of walmart. You'll be able to find at least 100 mg caps. When I took 5htp I took it 100 mgs 3 times a day. That seems to be an average dose, though certainly every practitioner reccomends something slightly different. It's frustrating to realize that even doctors don't know everything, and don't always agree!
