"B6 and 5-htp" , Mon 14 Jul 05:04

I've recently switched from sjw to 5-htp. It's a bit of an experiment. I stopped taking my 1200 mgs of sjw, and have been taking 100 mgs of 5-htp twice or three times a day, on an empty stomach. I've been taking Nature's Way, which includes B6. I also take a pretty powerful multivitamin, plus a B-complex vitamin. And now I hear that B6 changes the 5-htp into seratonin in the bloodstream, which is not good, preventing it from changing into seratonin in the brain, which is much better. Any one out there have any light to shed on this area?

Meanwhile, I'll continue to search the internet and read what I can find. By the way, it's way too early to tell (only third day of my experiment), but it SEEMS like I get a big kick from 5-htp. Each of the three days, after I take it in the morning, I seem to get very energized. Two of those three days, however, I got VERY sleepy in the afternoon. One of those two days, I got kind of depressed. Anyway, the search goes on.

Hiya -

I always found 5htp on its own to be not enough. It was only when I combined it with SJW did I get a balanced out effect. As for the B6 - I take the Nature's Way 5htp now, and find it to be mildly superior to the other brands I've tried; it doesn't give me nausea and I don't seem to get so fatigued.

SJW supposedly inhibits re-uptake of dopamine as well as serotonin, whereas 5-htp helps you make more serotonin (I think); and dopamine is responsible for feelings of alertness, whereas serotonin is more sleep-enhancing and feelings of well-being in a different sense. Both supplements seem to have a different effect depending on your neuro-set.

Good luck.

Loops.

Loops,
Melatonin is the sleep hormone created by 5htp and serotonin is the feel good nuerotransmitter.

Eddie,
As for the b6 and 5htp it depends on what you read and who you beleive, there doesn't seem to be much agreement on the effects of b6 with 5htp. I also use Nature's Way brand of 5htp w/ b6 and c and find it more effective than other brands.
