Topic Title: effects of 5-HTP ?
| | "effects of 5-HTP ?" , Sat 5 Jul 20:28:
I've been on 50(25)mg amitriptyline for the last three years. My doctor tries to convince me that I have depression, though the primary problem was 'complete' chronic insomnia and the tricyclic antidepressants were the only thing that keeps working. Several weeks ago I tried, once again, to live without meds and to my surprise I am able to sleep (1-2hrs to get asleep and 6 hours unmedicated sleep seems like a blessing compared to a year ago). However I noticed that now I find it quite difficult to concentrate, my memory plays tricks and I am less active also. Emocionally, I feel more balanced without the meds.
Has anyone achieved any success with such symptoms (concentration being the biggest issue)?
I took 100mg 5-HTP the last three days (together with B-complex) but did not notice any effect (besides some slight buzzing feeling in my head).

What works best for me is taking it every other day or once every 3 days. The first couple of days that I took 5-HTP, I didn't really feel anything. But as I continued taking it, I slowly began to feel its effects. Try taking it at least a month and then decide whether it works for you or not.

In fact it works minutes after i take it - I become more alert, focused (150mg in the morning). This effect normally lasts about 5-7 hours, but I'm losing my sleep again and I feel rather nervous. Did I start with too high doses? Here is my scheme: day_1: 50mg (not much effect) day_2: 100mg (I feel it) day_3: 100mg (same, took longer to get asleep) day_4: none (due to excessive quantity of beer the night before) day_5: 100mg (active and alert but slept only 5 hours) day_6: 150mg (same; some more anxiety; even less sleep) day_7: 100mg(am)+100mg(pm) (nervous and craving for sleep, we'll see the night)

You may have increased your dosage a little too fast. I think that you should have kept it at 100mg for at least two weeks, just so you would have used that dosage long enough to determine whether is was effective or not. From Day 5 to Day 7 you doubled the amount that you were taking. Maybe you should try taking a day off of the 5-HTP, or taking it at a different time of the day.
