Dupont,
You seem to know so much about all this stuff, and for that I'm grateful. Maybe you can answer some of my ?'s.

If you take 5-htp at night and it builds in your system should it be effective throughout the day too? What is the maximum amount one should take and best brand?

I've been taking 150 mg for two days now and so far pleased with results. I know it's a no-no but I'm taking it along with effexor as I'm trying to wean myself off of it. At what mg and amount of time in my system do you believe I can stop effexor completely.

Do you reccomend anything with the 5-htp. I have social anxiety, depression, and symptoms of ADD.

If you don't have all the answers, that's cool- just thought I'd give it a shot. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Glad to hear 5-htp works for you.
DD

I'm not sure about effexor is that an ssri?

I'm not an expert, but I would recommend a combination of sjw and 5htp, along with gingko biloba and essential fatty acids. From what I have read 5htp increases serotonin available to the brain and sjw keeps it there longer. Because I am allergic to sjw I took only a high dose of 5htp, 500 mg/day in 2 doses. If you take the combination of sjw and 5htp you would probably need a much lower dose. I like gingko because it helps with the brain "fog" which can be a side effect of both sjw and 5htp and the essential fatty acids are important for the brain as well.

I'm not sure about the build up of serotonin in the body or how exactly curing a serotonin deficiency works. From my experience 5htp wears off after a few hours, that's why a split dose of 250mg/day worked best for me. In the afternoon I could feel that morning dose wearing off. I would think that if you take 5htp before bed you would need another dose in the morning to get you through the day depending on the severity of your depression/anxiety. From what I have read 5htp has been shown to be safe up to 900 mg. That is the dose prescribed for weight loss in one study. I've tried a few different brands and I highly recommend Nature's Way brand of 5htp it is enteric coated and also contains vitamin b6 and c, important vitamins for converting 5htp to serotonin. 5htp should help the depression and anxiety, but I don't know about add.

Dupont,
Thanks for the reply. Effexor is an ssri, by the way. I'm down to half my normal dose but noticing that I am really anxious after I take 5-htp for about 2 hours. Can it do that?
Neway, I will try putting SJW with it.
Thanks for the advice.

Yes, sometimes 5htp will increase anxiety, but that should only last a couple of days as your body adjusts to the 5htp.
