Hi everyone, I hope someone could offer me some advice on my current situation. 6 months ago i suffered a severe depression, the main consequence being the inability to sleep.I did a lot of research (some of it here)and discovered that 5htp supplementation and the tryptophan in food could help me sleep all night ....wow !....I then slowly improved my mood and sleep and started to enjoy life again. I carried on with the regime of eating foods high in tryptophan and popping the odd 50mg 5htp at night even though i was feeling better, probably because i feared slipping back down the 'black hole '. I trusted in the fact that as long as i kept my serotonin levels up, sleep wouldnt be a problem. Just recently i had some recurring health problems which had a big impact on my daily life and found my mood slipping back again to the point where i found myself not able to sleep again, even though i was maintaining my tryptophan levels. My question is .....is it possible for your body to become 'used' to your current levels of trypophan(5htp)?.....does this mean that i'd have to take an even higher dosage than usual to get my sleep back ?......this seems the only likely scenario to me. In hindsight i should have reduced my dosages and ''high tryptophan foods'' once i was feeling better, then maybe it would work again for me when i needed it. It is a bit strange to me how a dose that worked fine before and knocked me out , no longer works....maybe the body gets used to these higher levels and requires even more if sleep becomes a problem again. This does suggest a 'tolerance' developing to 5htp and perhaps it loses its effectiveness over time and should only be used to help sleep in when really needed. anyone got any thoughts on this ?.......I did try taking 100mg at night once and had vivid hallucinations, very scary....not sure whether to try that again....any input on this subject greatly received, thankyou.

I have been taking 5htp 100 mg 3x day for about a month now. I have learned to not take it right before bed or I have incredible dreams and couldn't sleep. Once I learned that I now take my last pill before 6:00p.m. For about 2 1/2 weeks I slept incredibly. Then it started to subside. For the past week or so I'm back to sleeping terribly! The 5htp has continued to help me in other areas though: feeling alert, not so emotional, not craving sweets like I use to or breads. The one side effect that I have is constipation. So, I'm wondering if I should take it anymore? I'm not sleeping anymore and I don't feel comfortable about raising my dosage, and I'm constipated which is definitely not good.

5htp not only increases serotonin but also melatonin, the sleep hormone. Serotonin will improve your mood and melatonin will help you sleep better. If your mood doesnot need improving you could try supplementing with just melatonin for your sleep problems. If you need to improve your mood as well as sleep I suggest you increase the dose of 5htp but take it in the afternoon, not immediately before bed.
