Topic Title: 5HTP instead of Zoloft?
| | "5HTP instead of Zoloft?" , Sun 8 Jun 18:39
For mild anxiety and mild panic attacks Dr put me on Zoloft. It worked wonderfully for 6 weeks. Felt normal. No anxiety. Enjoyed life. Happy outlook. Then the dizzy spell came. Yuck. No way. Don't need the world spinning about, thank you very much! So, I stopped two days ago and the dizziness is gone. Now, I'm wondering if 5HTP can do as good a job for mild anxiety as Zoloft, with less side affects. Love to hear success stories out there. If it matters, I'm a 50 year old male, and generally in good health. Thanks a bunch!

everyone is totally different but in my life i have tried, zoloft, prozac, paxil for 2 years, lexapro and wellbutrin, also did st.johns wort years ago when it first came out
some of those i liked but the sideeffects for me were always nasty
st.johns didnt do much for me it was the reason i almost didnt try 5htp.. cuz i didnt have much faith in herbs and really thought they were for ppl who wernt as screwed up as me..lol to be very honest..i thought i was a bad case and needed the ssri's.
well i was wrong..i gave 5htp a shot anyways and man yup...works better then paxil or zoloft ever did..for me personally
but for others not so much..
i am thinking of adding a lil st.johns, fish oil and tyrosine to my 5htp but dont wanna buy each and everyone seperate so i am kinda shopping around but till them i am totally happy with 5htp,i started at 50mgs when i stopped lexapro..i waited 3 weeks..well i didnt..i was suppossed too but only waited 2 weeks to be very honest..lol and started at 50mgs a day of the 5htp, i am up to 300 and its working like a charm..i feel really good, balanced, and just as well as i ever did on paxil without the weight gain , fatigue and low sex drive..
and i have only been on 2 months..now it could be me having a placebo affect ..maybe sure..but its werid for me to go 2 months iwthout panic or depression..sooo something is working..lol thats just me though:) i hope you find your way:)
but yah i totally swear by 5htp...i just wanna add the other stuff from reading about it cuz i am a curious soul:) but even if i dont..i think 5htp alone works really good for me:)

Hi Howard,
I wonder why you seem interested in 5-htp, but you don't mention SJW. While there's some evidence to support the use of both, there have been far more studies on the latter.
Why not try both, in combination? There is a plausible hypothesis that the two have a synergistic effect on each other, that the sum of the two is greater than the parts.
I use both, plus fish oil. I saw another post that said mixing different herbs "smacks of desperation." I disagree strongly - I think with herbal medicines combined therapies are often much more effective than single-substance therapies.
It's probably also important to get involved in non-herbal approaches to dealing with depression - say, an excercise program, therapy, journalling, or whatever works for you.
