"5htp + setraline" , Tue 22 Apr 15:55

I am currently taking 100mg Lustral ( Zoloft ) after two failed suicide attempts. I am still feeling desperately low but taking 200mg makes me feel very ill and so my psych advises to stay on that dosage for the moment. I am now thinking of adding in either 5HTP which I have already bought,or kava kava, to enhance the effects of the Lustral. Some info advises against this but I am keen to try it in the hope of saving myself a third attempt on my life. Does anyone have any experience of taking these remedies together and what, if any, are the effects ?
Any advice gratefully received!

Im a 45yr old man and I believe that I am depressed, at least I seem to be showing all of the symptoms....panic attacks, mood swings and generally not coping with life. My GP originally prescribed 25mg lustral which I took daily for about a month. When the depression didnt lift she upped the dose to 50mg which I have been on since mon past.
My problem (aside from the depression lol) is that I dont seem to be able to eat. My stomach is constantly in a knot and the very thought of food makes me feel sick, so much so that Ive lost almost 25lbs in weight.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated...what do I do..Is this normal and if so will it get better?
Regards Gerry

Have you realized that you mean something to someone? That someone out there needs you?

Hi,

Actually, it is possible to take 5HTP with an antidepressant, but you don't want to take too much as there is a danger of overloading on serotonin. I was tapering off of paxil and taking 100 mgs of 5HTP. That worked just fine for me. Even the manufacturer of Prozac has done experiments with adding 5htp to a regimen of prozac and found it increased circulating serotonin in the brain, and to my knowledge wasn't harmful to the patients participating. Especially if you can lower the dose of Zoloft a bit and add a small dose of 5HTP to start, it should be safe. I'd try and contact the clinic of Julia Ross, author of "The Mood Cure" (a phenomenal book that I wholeheartedly reccomend). If you do a google search on "Mood Cure", you should be easily able to find the web page and get contact information. It's all the way in California, USA, but I know that they have combined 5HTP and antidepressants, and might be able to advise you on what dose would be best. Watch out though, their email system has been having problems, and your email might get lost, so either send multiple emails, or just try calling them directly. The book also has information on other helpful nutrients which definately can be taken with antidepressants.
Good luck to you. I hope you can discern what your body needs to make you happy. There are many possibilities out there, you just have to do a little research, and try your damndest not to give up!
