Topic Title: 5-HTP: Just be patient!

I started 5-HTP about a month and a half ago. The very first day that I took 5-HTP, I felt great. But I felt absolutely nothing for the rest of that week. After 2 weeks, I didn't feel any better. At this point, I began to wonder if it would ever produce the effects that I desired. By the end of the third week, I began to notice a change in my behavior. My depression began to subside, and my anxiety was under control. It took about a month to really kick in. When I first began to take it, it gave me more anxiety. I was pacing the floor, my nerves were twitching, and I was easily irritated. However, I continued to take it and those symptoms are gone. 5-HTP works differently in each person. Some people feel immediate relief, and for others it just takes longer to kick in. This is what seems to work best for me: I take 100mg for 4 days in a row. Then, I'll go 3 days without taking it. I don't know why, but the 3 days that I don't take it is when I feel my best! At first I would take it everyday, but after 6 or 7 days in a row it didn't do much. So I decided to take it a couple of days, and then lay off of it for a couple of days. For some odd reason, this is what has worked best for me. I would advise anyone who is considering to stop taking 5-HTP after only a few days, DON'T STOP. Give it at least a month, and then make your decision. You also may need to try different dosages, and maybe try taking some days off like I do. I just wanted to share my regimen because it is working for me. I hope this information helps someone.

you've got a good point about trial and error ... i'm figuring things out doing just that.
i've figured out that along with serotonin i need protein. so the right amount of 5-htp AND l-tyrosine (or natural protein). what's the right amount ... i'm still working on that. i'm thinking it will never ever be the same every day. we have different stresses and changes every day so the dosage needed will be different each day. boy i wish i could find a slow drip.
may be the days you don't take 5-htp your and protein levels are in sync. imagine an x-y chart where 5htp makes a line from the bottom left to the top right and the proteins (ephnephrine and norephenphrine) make a line from the top left to the bottom right. where they intersect is the optimal point. for you it could be the three days.
now what i'm trying to do is maybe the same as you which is to make both lines horizontal and on top of eachother every day of every week of every month so i'm stable every day and month!!
what do you think? how can we do this?

Sajosh.... Sorry I took so long to reply. I haven't checked this site in a couple of weeks. I didn't know that you responded to my post. Trial and error... Exactly. That is what must be done. Since everyone's genetic makeup is different, people must try different dosages and time intervals- until they find which one is most effective. I would love to find the perfect dosage/time interval that makes me feel relaxed everyday. I'm still trying to figure that out!
