I have been on 5htp 100mg 3x per day, with L-Tyrosine 500 mg per day. I have been on this dosage for at least a year, have helped greatly with panic attack and depression. For the past few weeks it feels like the 5htp is not working, getting those stressed out panicky thought again, ( work related ) . Do you build up an immunity to this stuff, or is it ok to take for the long term? I went to my doctor regarding this and she sent me off with a prescription of Effexor-rx. I was almost tempted to get it filled when i thought i would do a little research. I did not like what i found, it seem s to be a quite a horrid ad. The thing that scared me was the weight gain, Im currently on OWL of the Atkins, and exercise 5-6 days a week, which really helps the mood. With anyone of any knowledge regarding 5htp tolerance give me their feedback? I am scared to death to start the effexor, my my doctor completely dismissed the idea that 5htp was helping, i beg to differ.
Thanks

hi i have been on effexor for about 3 months. i am trying to quit it at the moment. i used Paxil before this one. and the worst thing about these medicines is the withdrawal effects. i gained 25 pounds in about 8 months with Paxil but Effexor is said to be less likely to cause you gain weight. these medicines are quite powerful though. when they work they really change your life. i am using SAMe at the moment. it is good but nothing close to Paxil. so i would use them if nothing else works. and remember all the sideeffects are different from person to person. Effexor could cause you lose weight too. so if you end up deciding to take it start with a low dosage and keep it low for a while until you are sure that it is not giving you any sideeffects. because it is much more painful to quit this stuff at higher dosages. and try SAMe maybe, or SJW. another dangeruos sideeffect of Effexor by the way: may cause high blood pressure at high dosage. i am actually surprised your doctor wanted start with Effexor. Prozac is much safer and easier to quit for instance. i know i confused you more but i wanted to share my experience. good luck

Thanks for your input, my doctor has always been pushing to put me on antidepressants, but i have resisted as i am scared s**tless of the side effects , withdrawal etc. Everytime i think maybe this is the best for me to go on AD i go on line , read peoples horror stories and chicken out, i have a pharmacy of AD in my bedroom. I just cant bring myself to take them. I do not have panic attacks anymore, as well i dont feel that i am that depressed, i have my moments, ( i have a child that was diagnosed with autism last year ) that is a hard pill to swallow, and have undergone major life changes around this. So overall , i think im holding up, and will continue with the 5htp, im thinking about adding St. Johns Wort, but im on BC pills and i heard that is may decrease the effectiveness of them. Ahh the quest continutes.
Take care.
