Hi. I started taking 5-HTP a couple of weeks ago. Just a small dose (50mg per day) but I'm finding it's leading to anxiety and sleeping problems. Will these symptoms subside? If so, typically how long does it take for this to happen?

Many thanks,

James

Hey, I feel the same way. I started taking 5-HTP two weeks ago, and I have increased anxiety. I began taking 5-HTP to alleviate anxiety, but it's making it worse! Sometimes I can feel nerves twitching in my arms and legs. I also have headaches and sometimes I get hot for no reason. The very first day that I took 5-HTP, I felt great. But since then, I haven't felt the same as that first day. I don't have any sleeping problems though. I'm taking 100mg a day right now. Others have also said that they had increased anxiety in the first couple of weeks. Maybe we will start to feel better after the first month or so. I'm going to give the 5-HTP a couple more weeks and then I'll decide.

interesting... someone posted that 5-HTP may cause some anxiety for the first week or so and then may taper off from there... However, I have read that if you get too much seratonin it will just equate or even amplify the problem you are initially trying to combat... so maybe your dose is too high... maybe it'd help to start on a lower dose and then taper yourself up on the supplement as needed. If that doesn't work, I guess I'd have to assume that you really aren't depleted of seratonin at all, but that you possibly are in need of GABA (another amino acid, which induces calming effects). hrmmm.. anyhow, enough of my rambling.. but I have found the book titled "the mood cure" by julia ross to be extremely informative, interesting and helpful... so naturally I really recommend it to EVERYONE battling imbalances.. simmilar to myself. :)
