Topic Title: Women and 5htp
| | "Women and 5htp" , Thu 27 Feb 12:10
This is more a question for girls.
I was taking 5htp by Albi for a few months and I noticed that I didn't have my period for 6 months. I ran out of those pills and bought a cheaper brand, NOW (canadian brand) and now I'm getting my period every two weeks.
Has anyone else noticed this bizarre phenomenon? I'm 26 yrs old so it's not like I'm going through menopause. If you have any info, lemme know.

I too was taking 5htp about 2 months ago for 2 weeks, and I still have not had a period, and I do believe its related to taking the 5htp. I took ora labs and natures way brand. I am pretty regular so I trully believe it has something to do with this. I stopped taking 5 htp because I really didnt see any results from it, I did however feel alittle buzzed. Im currently taking a mixture of vitamins and getting good results with them for my GAD and panic. Im taking Magnesium/calcium, B-6, and a supplement called inositol. I definitly feel calmer, but doesnt always work for panic.

I agree that it may indeed be hormonal and the brand change was just coincidental. Unfortunately, in a small number of cases, 26 is not too early for menopause,in which case it's termed Premature Ovarian Failure, or POF, and can happen even in the teens. I'm taking a leap here that you are using 5htp for anxiety. Anxiety can be a hallmark of hormonal imbalance as the neurotransmitters are "co-dependent" on estrogen. My other thought is that it could be thyroid related as thyroid problems can mimic menopause sx. In any case, do go see your Dr. for a definitive dx.

I think it would be a good idea to go to your doctor for a checkup! I don't know if 5htp could be causing these problems. I do think it could be something else, though, something hormonal perhaps, that should be checked out. Take care of yourself!!
