Wonder if anyone has any advice on the dose/effects of 5-htp - i know Dupont seems particularly knowledgeable but i would appreciate advice from any of you guys.

My story - I've battled with insomnia related to depression/anxiety for years now. Things got to a head around a year ago - lack of sleep meant i could hardly do a normal days work or even sleep in the same bed as my husband. I started taking 5-htp last year - only 50mg a day and this was a god send, sleep and general mood improved greatly. However lately things have slipped again, my sleep in particular is bad - i seem to drift in and out of very light sleep and this is even worse if my husband attempts to share the bed. All in all lack of sleep is getting me down and i am so so scared of going down that black hole again. I was wondering if I should increase the dose or try something else - basically the sleep is the main thing I need to control, as when I'm sleeping well my mood usually lifts immediately.

I would be very grateful for any advice as I really want to sleep normally - in particular sleep in the same bed as my husband and get a "normal" nights sleep
Thanks

Hello,

Sorry to hear you are going through such a rough time. I've had a pretty serious anxiety/depression problem for quite a while so I can empathise with your situation. I take 5HTP for anxiety mainly but there was a point in time (after a few months) where I felt as if it was not as effective for me. I take 150 mg a day (50 mg 3 times a day) but what I found to be helpful in restoring the calming effect of 5HTP was L-Tyrosine (an amino acid supplement at 500 mg a day). I read about this combination in Dr. Murray's book about 5HTP which I recommend you read....there is a whole chapter on Insomnia. You may find taking a slightly higher dose helps you, or maybe you should take your dose closer to bed time.
I hope one of these suggestions helps you. Let us all know how it goes....

-lisa

Are you going through a particullary stressful time right now? I suggest increasing your dose to 100mg.

Here is the dosing guidelines from the book "5htp the natural alternative to Prozac"

Some physicians have found it best to start their patients out by taking 150 to 200 mg at bedtime. If this is insufficient to provide antidepressant/anti-anxiety relief, they can take additional doses of 33 to 50 mg during the day. The number of these doses should be adjusted to a level that provides adequate relief without causing daytime sedation.

If you are taking 5-HTP to enhance sleep, it is probably best to take the entire 300-mg dose at bedtime.

Here is the website:
