hi everyone. i am new, just registered with this site. i suffer from panic disorder. i was on klonipin since i was 14, and recently went off it in Nov. 2002. i had severe withdrawl from them. i am now suffering from depression, i think from the panic, and am taking sam-e. i was taking 800mg, but just went up to 1200 mg. i have heard a lot of good things about 5 htp and would like to take that also. i am very scared to mix the two. can i do that? my doctor doesn't know much, and i don't think he really cares. he said i could, but i still want to make sure. i have already taken it for 2 days, and last night i had a severe panic attack. not sure if it was from the 5 htp or not. please help me if possible. thanks. -nicole

Hi Nicolel: I have a book from the library in front of me called Your Miracle Brain by Jean Carper. In it she has a chapter on SJW and one on SAM-E. I quote from the book: "SAM-e has no harmful interactions with other medications, including prescription antidepressants and St. John's Wort. However, don't combine MAO inhibitor-type antidepressants and SAM-e, just in case, cautions Dr. Brown (he's a psychiatrist, famous for his book on the subject)..and inform your doctor about what you're taking." I hope my quotation from Your Miracle Brain is helpful to you. I myself have tried 5-HTP months ago, but it did nothing for me, so I don't use it. I just bought 30 SAM-e capsules (400 mg.) and I'm about to give SAM-e a good trial, while taking two SJW along wtih it till SAM-e kicks in. Wish me luck! Jeanette
