"How long can one take 5HTP safely?" , Tue 14 Jan 19:55:

hello all,

I've been taking 5-HTP at 200 mg (50 mg 4 times a day) for just about 3 months now. The results have been very good. I have noticed a good decrease in my anxiety, much help in recovering from my eating disorder, and even help with quitting smoking and mild depression. I am worried about taking 5-HTP in the long term however. I am afraid of going through withdrawls should I decide to wean off the 5-HTP. Has anyone had any bad experiences with lowering your dosage or quitting after a long period of 5-HTP use?
I've also been taking L-Tyrosine at 500 mg a day as recommended by Dr. Murray. The results are very good but I don't want to feel as if I am dependent upon these supplements for life. I would be willing to take them for as long as necessary if I felt as if I were sure they were safe.
Any info about long term use or possible withdrawls with weaning off would be greatly appreciated.
Good luck to all!

-lisa

I remember reading somewhere that it wasn't good to take the stuff for too long a time too, though I can't recall why. I think it was in Murray's book. ANYWAY. I'm with you, Poetesslisa, I don't like the idea of having to take anything forever. Before I started taking 5-htp, I was trying to work with a book called "Your Last Diet!: The Sugar Addict's Weight-Loss Plan" by Kathleen, Ph.D. Desmaisons. It's basically a diet designed to boost serotonin and endorphin levels in the brain. It was too hard to get on the diet while in the throes of serotonin deficiency, but I'm planning to get on it and stay on and then stop taking the pills eventually. I always feel better tackling these things through nutrition if possible.

I've been taking 5htp for 2.5 years and I haven't had any problems. No withdrawals, and no need to wean off of it. I take it as needed now. I can feel it physically when my serotonin levels are getting low.

However, I don't think there have been any studies on the long term effects of 5htp. But while doing some research I came across this website that I found both amusing and promising. Please don't be offended...............check it out:
