Topic Title: What happened to me scared me
| | "What happened to me scared me (5-htp)" , Tue 31 Dec 20:43:
5-htp I have been having problems sleeping, so I thought I would give 5-htp a shot. I started at the minimal dose recommended on the bottle. That night I had the worst nightmare in my life. Thinking it might not be connected I continued taking. I started hallucinating and I started to physically break down,( shaking crying,) I honestly thought that i lost my mind.I was rushed to the emergency hospital. I was given a tranquilizer which was great after 3 days without sleep. For your information I was taking no other medications at the time. And I eat fairly well, as well as multivitamin

I take 5-htp for a variety of reasons (depression, migraines, overeating and insomnia, which collectively comprise serotonin deficiency syndrome). For insomnia, I tried a dose before bed (once 50 mg and once 100 mg) and it was very strange indeed. Strange dreams, etc. I didn't like it at all. Then I read that if you take it in the daytime there's no need to take it at night because it triggers the brain to produce melatonin, which is only produced at night. So you take htp in the day, it turns into serotonin, then at night, your body produces melatonin, which is what really combats the insomnia. I've had a much better time of it that way.

5-HTP, through conversion in the brain, is converted to serotonin for the most part. Through a separate conversion pathway, it could turn to other miscellaneous substances (some researchers believe one of them to be DMT... a hallucinogen with frightening potential). Another possibility is that too much serotonin in the brain will lead to "serotonin syndrome," which may also induce panic. This is especially true if you are currently taking an MAO Inhibitor, or another powerful antidepressant.

Wow!
5HTP can cause nightmares, but what happened afterwards sounds like a panic attack. Was the dosage 50mg?, this is considered a low dosage and is safe. I take 150mg at bedtime but I dont get nightmares just crazy dreams (which I like). What brand did you take, maybe it's a bad batch.
