Topic Title: anyone try 900mg for weight loss?

Just wondering if anyone has actually tried the high dosage that the weight loss studies used. Does it in fact suppress appetite and what are the side effects if any? Just wanted to hear some personal experiences.

I've read that 900 mg is right on the border of overdose in at least two different sources. We have to be careful here, people, we're tinkering with our brain chemistry. That's nothing to be light about. I've been taking between 150 and 300 mg per day (upped the dose after 2 weeks) for about 6 weeks and have lost 4 pounds, although that's not the main reason I've been taking it. The only way it helps for weight loss is that it supposedly takes away carb cravings and suppresses appetite. I'm a binge eater and have found that I am not so inclined to do that so much while on htp. also, if I eat too much, I really feel it now and stop. You still have to exercise and eat well in order to lose weight on this stuff.

Hi
Interesting question. I ordered 5-HTP from iherb with the aim of taking it for weight loss. I took 100 mg a day for a week and noticed no difference in mood or anything, apart from bad dreams.
After that I read just how much you have to take for appetite suppression - 900 mg or 18 tablets a day! So a bottle of 60 tablets would last 3 days??!!! What a con! Probably the only way it works for weight loss is that you can't afford to buy food after paying for all the 5-HTP!
So, I wasn't prepared to do it from a cost point of view and also was not keen on risking side effects, seeing as it had caused bad dreams already and no benefits.

Yeah, I am not too impressed with that huge dosage thing either. Had some effects on sleep. Yes, I slept more but it was not refreshing more just zonked...chuckle chuckle about the lack of money for food.

I took 500 mg once and I felt "stoned" without the munchies, can't imagine what 900 mg would feel like.

I think I must not really need that much because I have 200mg every second day for fibromyalgia and that takes away pain between my shoulder blades, switches my brain on and also mildly suppresses my appetite.
I'm a big advocate of the good old 5-HTP
