Hi everyone,

I'm having a little trouble deciding which brand of 5HTP to go for...So many choices!

I've noticed many of them contain B6 - which would be fine except for the fact that i've read on a website that whilst you need B6 to help the 5HTP turn into serotonin in your brain, you should be wary of taking additional B6 at the same time because don't want the 5HTP to turn into serotonin in the blood before it reaches your brain - if it does it will never even get to your brain and will be wasted.

This is part of the text i read...

TRYPTOPHAN TO SEROTONIN CONVERSION
When neurons convert tryptophan into serotonin, they first use a vitamin B-3 dependent enzyme to convert tryptophan into 5-HTP. A vitamin B6 -dependent enzyme is then used to convert 5-HTP into serotonin. Avoid taking vitamin B6 supplements within 6 hours of taking (5-HTP) because B6 can cause the conversion of 5-HTP to serotonin in the blood before it has a chance to cross the blood-brain barrier to increase serotonin in the brain.</b>

THIS IS THE LINK WHERE I FOUND THE ABOVE TEXT...

So this begs the question...Which formula/brand of 5HTP is best for depression...? Can you get a time release formula so the B6 is released 6 hours later or somthing?

In addition to this other brands (like the Holland and Barratt one mentioned in a previous post) contain valerian root (50mg) which i understand is used as a sleeping aid/relaxant. Would this make one more drowsy in the daytime...?

Anyways, any advice or answers would be much appreciated...

...also for anyone interested on precisely how various SSRI's/5HTP/MOA or antidepressants work in laymans terms with a visual slideshow I would highly reccommend checking out the URL below..

http://www.dancesafe.org/slideshow/index.html

I know it's based on the way MDMA (ecstasy) works on serotonin, but I think many of you would find it very enlightening and it should go some way to help explain exactly how all the other antidepressants like 5HTP and Prozac work too. It's certainly more easy to understand than a load of medical text explinations!

Any feedback or advice would be most welcome!

Cheers!

M

Ps Excellent site! Keep up the good work!

Valerian root is the herb from which valium is synthesized, as I understand it. Different people react differently to different substances, as for me valerian drugs me completely. I believe that it is also addictive. I tend to shy away from that herb altogether myself.

I have had the best results with Nature's Way 5htp with b6 and c, it is enteric coated. I never have stomach upset while taking it and compared to other brands I feel the best while taking this brand.

I found Holland and Barrets capsules 60 x 50mg to be very good with no stomach upsets.
I take multivitamins that contain a lot of B6, but I just spread out the periods of consumption between 5-htp and any vitamin.
5-HTP works for me only on a "need to take basis" I tried taking it everyday (three capsules)and found its effects seemed to diminish.
But I have say a hangover from drink or something is over-bothering me I take three at once (150mg) and find this way continous to work.
So maybe there is a tolerance built up by our systems.
