Topic Title: My experience on SJW and 5-HTP
| | "My experience on SJW and 5-HTP" , Sat 26 Oct 19:37:
Hi!
For anyone interested I thought I'd post my experience with SJW and 5-HTP so far.
I have been taking SJW for 3 months now with great effects (it initially did not work but then I changed brands). The only thing was I found was I developed a very large appetite and read that 5-HTP is an appetite suppressant. So I ordered some from iherb and it arrived 5 days ago (I am in Australia)! In eagerness I commenced my new regime of still taking 3 tablets of 300mg SJW a day- plus 50mg of 5-HTP on an empty stomach an hour before eating. I have noticed that my dreams are even more vivid (but not disturbing in any way) and I'm sleeping even more soundly. But unfortunately I have not noticed any change in appetite!
There has been no change in depression and anxiety levels, but I was feeling fine before anyway because of the SJW (I used to be a wreck). Now I am no longer worried about everything, I am calm, relaxed around strangers, don't have racing thoughts any more, am finding it easier to think positively and rationally, have control over my thoughts.
Maybe this is a case of "if it ain't broke don't fix it" and maybe this is the best I'm going to feel?
I am reluctant to increase 5-HTP to 100mg and will continue with 50mg plus the 3 tablets of SJW and hope for some decrease in piglike tendencies!
Just thought I'd share this with you and any comments would be much appreciated. I really don't have much to complain about - SJW has done wonders for me.

I find that my appetite hasn't really been "suppressed" from 5-htp, but I don't feel like bingeing anymore, which is amazing, as I've been doing that since I was 11 or so (I'm 35 now). I had to increase my dose from 50 mg 3x a day to 100 mg 3 x a day to get that effect though. I think taking 50-100 mg a day would do next to nothing for me.

Hi Suling:
Still pigging out, eh? I doubt it's from SJW, unless, in relieving your former depressed state, it's restored your appetite? I find that I sometimes eat too much out of sheer boredom...Some of us, lucky enough to connect with a new lover, become motivated to to keep our weight down, so we'll look our best(without clothing!)Could it be that you've been inhaling a certain herb (not SWJ), and are plagued with the "munchies?" Naught boy. Well now, in all seriousness, would you tell me the lowdown on 5-HTP? Like you, I've been taking SJW (3 and sometimes 4 tablets of Standardized SJW) a day for 6 weeks with VERY good results (I was so depressed)and I've just started 5-HTP and have taken one 50 mg. capsule today, but feel no different so far. Does it kick in after a few days? Does it have to build up for a while? I'd LOVE to experience more vivid dreaming...Don't know why some people complain about that delightful side effect...And yes, about L-Tyrosine, are you sure it's OK for me to take one 500 mg. capsule a day, either instead of, or in addition to 5-HTP? I'll be looking for your response here. Do write back soon. Jeanette from New York City

Hi Jeanette
Well, I've been taking 5-HTP (50-100mg)for 6 days and feel no different. I don't know how long it takes, but I have read that some people feel an effect immediately or after a short time. After this bottle I think I'll just leave it.
Also I read that for appetite suppression the dosage should be 600mg to 900 mg a day! How ridiculous! I'm not prepared to take that many pills! Not to mention the expense. Anyway, on the bottle it said the maximum dosage should be 200g a day. The other thing that concerns me a little is that there are far more warnings/concerns on the internet about 5-HTP than about SJW.
The SJW I have is combined with L-Tyrosine so I'd assume it's safe. I take 750mg of L-Tyrosine a day (250mg in each SJW capsule).

Hi Suling! I'm glad you posted about how 5-HTP worked for you because I'm going to be taking it soon. Sorry to hear that it didn't control your appetite. Maybe it'll work better on a higher dosage. There's only 1 brand of 5-HTP available in my area and thats the Natrol brand so I guess thats the only one I can choose from. I sure hope it helps control my appetite because lately I've been eating alot.
Take care, Karla

Thanks Karla
Funny you should mention about a higher dosage - I have increased 5-HTP to 100 mg yesterday (still with 3 tablets of 300mg SJW). I ordered the Nature's Way brand of 5-HTP from iherb. I had the most vivid dream last night.....
Let me know how you get on with 5-HTP.

Hi Suling,
I'm also taking 3 x 300 SJW and 100mg 5htp, and I haven't noticed any change in appetite on these. I was actually worried about losing too much weight if I took 5htp, as I'm fairly slim anyway and people soon notice if I lose a few pounds. It actually had no effect on my eating habits, but for a while my sleeping patterns were really disturbed. That's OK now, but I still get very vivid dreams.
I think I'll probably give 5htp a chance until the end of the bottle, but I'm also interested in some of the posts here that recommend taking a higher dose of SJW, so I may try that, minus the 5htp.
Best wishes, juju

Hi guys,
I have never had success with SJW but 5-HTP did help for anxiety. it took about 3 weeks to kick in, and i found an initial increase in anxiety before it decreased. Dosage : 100mg 3 times a day. I noticed no effect on appetite, but I've always been a light eater.

Matt,
How long were you off Paxil before you stopped the 5HTP? Did you stop 5HTP gradually? Any mood effects?
I am currently at 2 mgs. of paxil from 3.5 mgs., where I have been for a bit more than a week. This is very difficult and my hopes and dreams shift day by day.
I would love the opp. to email you and get some encouragement on my particular concerns.
Blessings, Bill

Hi Bill,
I started 5-htp about 3 weeks after quitting P cold turkey. AFter messing around with 5-htp dosage initially I think stayed on 5-htp for about 3 months on the 300mg dosage. because of the scare i got from P, I tapered down to only taking 5-htp in the morning and evenings for a few weeks, then only in the mornings for a week or two - i really was trying to monitor whether I was feeling an increase in anxiety and or depression but I did not. I now pop the ODD 5-htp. since i could not find any 5-htp in lesser amounts than 100mg capsules i did drop in those increments. I noticed no mood effects as a result, but that could just be me.
You are doing the tapering thing off Paxil perfectly. They do say the hardest bits are the last few jumps so hope you're coping OK. I suppose this forum is not the right place to talk about P withdrawal. good luck
Matt
