Topic Title: Sleeping Problems - help!!!!
| | "Sleeping Problems - help!!!!" , Tue 22 Oct 09:43
Hi I've been taking 5-htp pretty much constantly for 6 months now (50mg) a day for severe insomnia/anxiety. It was working brilliantly until recently and seems to have lost its effect. Has anyone else found this has happened to them? Should I increase the dose or is it best to try something else? I tried SJW in the past and this helped too but also gradually wore off. At the moment life is very hectic (moving house/new job) so i need some help to get me through this...
Thanks

Hi Sleepymel
I dont share your experience with 5-htp 'pooping' out but can comment on this phenomenon when it comes to the prescribed anti-depressents and anxiety meds such as Paxil, Prozac etc. These drugs sometimes do loose their efficacy (having worked fine before) and perhaps it's the same with 5-htp. Doctors normally respond by changing the dosage (i.e. upping the dosage), failing which other meds are prescribed. You're on quite a low dose so I think there's no harm in upping your dosage - I used to take 100mg 3 times daily for anxiety and that seemed to be the correct amount for me (I understand that is the recommended dosage for anxiety as well).
Good luck
Matt

I think i will up my dose as I'm having quite a stressful time at the moment (buying a new home and moving job) so my mind is racing full time - hence why I can't sleep. I do need to sleep as at least i'm more able to cope then...
Does anybody have any information as to how long you can take 5-HTP for? I've been taking 50mg for 6 months now, is this safe? I've heard you are supposed to take frequent breaks, is this true?
