I've used 5-htp before to treat depression and low confidence/self-esteem, with no noticeable side-effects with regular use.
Since the last year or so, I have developed allergies to certain foods. For instance, red onions make me feel hot and noticeably impair my concentration, and blue cheese causes the development of mucus and sensitivity in my sinuses, along with concentration impairment. Along with these symptoms is a general feeling of being 'out of it'.
I took 50mg 5-htp today since, for a month or so, I have been feeling irritable and have been experiencing a lack of motivation/feelings of difficulty getting through each day - particularly whilst at work.
However, on this occasion, I started to feel, on the one hand, relaxed and detached (which is normal for me with 5-htp) and yet with feelings of anxiety and not being quite with it, in varying intensity. My throat and chest have also felt tight, and I have eperienced a feeling of being out of breath, which I have experienced somewhat during the last few months in the form of anxiety, although not noticeable in the past few weeks. I also experienced a feeling of unrealness for a few minutes, which I also experience with anxiety.
I'm wondering whether I am having a reaction to the 5-htp this time, or whether it is a side-effect that will pass.
I should perhaps mention that before taking the 5-htp (at around 2pm), I had eaten two toasted cheese sandwiches for breakfast and later three yoghurts, a lump of cheese and a banana. (I sometimes have cravings for dairy products).
I'm also vegetarian.
