Hey Group:

Has anyone else here experienced nasal congestion/swollen nasal cavity/tight throat about 10 to 12 hours after taking 5-HTP? This just started for me about 1 week into taking it. I started out taking 100 mg. with a snack about 1 hour before going to bed and was too tired the next day so reduced it to 50 mg. I found that I was still too tired the next day and started to develop the congestion and tight throat stuff so I stopped taking it for a couple of days. I thought that if I took it every 2nd or 3rd day that I would still benefit from it. I also thought I should take 25 mg. and work my way up. Basically, I don't know what to do, whether it be go back up to 100 mg. and wait for the fatigue to go away and hope the reduced dose is causing the other symptoms or discontinue using it altogether because maybe I am one of the unfortunate people who will experience a rare side effect. I also wondered if maybe I was experiencing withdrawal from the Remeron that I just stopped taking prior to starting the 5-HTP, but figured these symptoms should then be continuous and not 10 hours after taking a dose of the 5-HTP. Finally, I just bought some L-Tyrosine which I am considering taking each morning and maybe this will improve things for me.

What to do, what to do...

Marsha

P.S. I am a bit pill wary, having just ended a 2+ year dependency/tolerance problem with Lorazepam (a benzodiazepine) which was absolutely horrible. I was initially prescribed it for my insomnia and assured it was perfectly safe to take for the rest of my life, need be. Ya right!

Sounds to me like you are having an allergic reaction to something. Whether it is the 5htp or something else. Are you allergic to beans? If so, stop taking the 5htp all together. If you are looking for something to help you sleep you could try melatonin instead.
