I was on Paxil for about two and a half years. The withdrawals lasted 8 1/2 weeks. Someone had said it was easier to withdrawal from heroin. I can believe it. From severe dizziness, nausea to chest pain to vertigo. But it does come to an end - Thank God! Amongst other things, I am now on 200mg 5-HTP before bed, and 1800mg SJW during the daytime. That dark and eternal tunnel, that is all too familiar to people of depression, has gone. Below is my list.

Morning:

Multi Vitamin – 2 Tablets
Ginkgo Biloba – 2 Tablets – 120mg
Glucosamine/Condroitin – 3 Tablets – 1500/1200mg
Rhodiola Rosea – 2 Tablets – 680mg
Chromium Picolinate – 3 Tablets – 1200mcg
Co Q-10 – 6 Tablets – 450mg
L-Tyrosine – 2 Tablet – 1000mg
DHEA – 2 Tablets – 100mg
L-Carnitine – 3 Tablets – 1500mg
St. John’s Wort – 6 Tablets – 1800mg

Night Time:
5 HTP – 4 Tablets – 200mg.

Hello!

My name is Mary Ellen Day and am a 41 year old female. I have suffered from depression all of my life but never wanted to take anti-depressants because of side effects. I started taking 50 mgs of 5-HTP twice daily and after a few months it seemed to stop working, so I followed the instructions and gradually went up to 100 mgs a day twice daily. This amount worked fine for the depression. But, I noticed I would feel really tired and sluggish so I began taking it about an hour before bedtime. This really worked well for me and I began to have better quality sleep time and felt better all around. Then I found out that L-tyrosine, an amino acid, increases the effectiveness of 5-htp as an anti-depressant. I began to take 1,500 mgs of l-tyrosine with the 5-htp and have felt more energetic, motivated and depression free than ever. These products have made a real difference in my life. I used to hate life. Now I love it. I can handle life now.

I recommend that you search Google for 5-htp and L-Tyrosine and read as much as you can.I got some good info for L-tyrosine at: www.mqrx.com/shopping/product.asp?id=180 .

I found that the 5-HTP was too expensive here in Puerto Rico, I've been considering trying St. johns Wort. But I am just considering it at this point and reading all I can find about it, just as I did with 5-htp and L-tyrosine. I did find out that L-tyorosine also enhances the effects of st. johns wort.

You can reach me at: [email protected]. I have some of my poems and short stories published at this site.

Seek and ye shall find!

Keep searching and you will find the balance that is good for you.

Mary Ellen Day

I took 500 mg of 5htp for about 2 years and did NOT develop a tolerance...but everyone is different. I am better today, and only take 5htp as needed. The recommended dose is between 100-300 mg /day. Checkout this website for dosages

I just found this forum a few days ago. I have been having a problem with insomnia and mild depression after having a complete hysterectomy a few months ago. I was considering taking SJW and started reading all of the posts about 5-HTP. I bought some and have taken it for two nights now about an hour before bed. Yesterday while checking out the forum, I found that some of you are taking L-Tyrosine with the 5-HTP. I guess it is supposed to increase the effects of the 5-HTP. My question is: How much do you take and when do you take it? Do you take the L-Tyrosine together with the 5-HTP? My doctor has tried me on every antidepressant there is over the last few years, mainly for the insomnia. All I have had is alot of adverse reactions so have not taken any antidepressants since April. I would appreciate any information or advice that any of you might have!!

Lucy
