"5-htp and anxiety" , Fri 14 Jun 07:05

Hi everyone

Reading through the posts and links in the forum I'm confused as to the efficacyof 5-htp for anxiety. 5-htp has helped tremendously in making me sleep (whilst withdrawing from Paxil) but I still suffer from debilitating anxiety attacks and am not sure whether this is (an initial?) response to 5-htp, still related to Paxil withdrawal, or whether 5-htp is simply not the right thing. I have tried SJW before going onto Paxil - it wasn't strong enough for me and had little effect. Have been off Paxil now for 3 weeks+ and on 5-htp for a week. Have changed my dosage from 150mg twice a day to 100 mg 3 times a day. Any advice from the gurus?

Much appreciated,

Matt

Some people DO feel an increase in anxiety when they first begin 5htp. That will change as your body becomes adjusted to the 5htp. The dose you are taking is what is recommended for anxiety, I think you just need to give it more time. For me a combination of 5htp and Kava works best for sever anxiety (panic atacks), but that's just me. Some people are concerned about taking Kava because of the reports about it causing liver damage. So if you have an existing Liver problem don't take Kava.

Here is a link about a study of the effects of 5htp on anxiety
http://www.smart-publications.com/books/5htp/chap-04.htm

It was a 12 week study:
"By week 12, panic attacks had almost completely disappeared in the seven patients suffering from that disorder; overall 9/10 patients showed improvement as measured by the STAI and HAS scales. Improvement was apparent by week 4 and continued until week 8, after which it leveled off. Figure 6 shows the mean symptom scores before 5-HTP treatment (Baseline) and after 12 weeks of 5-HTP. Significant improvement was seen for depression, anxiety and phobic anxiety."

I would expect to see improvement after about 4 weeks on 5htp at 300 mg /day.

Thanks very much Dupont! I'll keep at it and report back to the forum should there be others later who may find this useful.
