Hi all. I started taking 5-HTP last fall after weaning off of Paxil taken for 8 years! It seemed to help alot. I started out at 100 mg, but went down to 50 mg this year. I am still struggling with depression. I sleep ok. I would love to know why you are not supposed to take it for more than 3 months. Does anyone know if it is supposed to harm your liver? I am getting sick of feeling down and wonder if going back on antidepressants is the only option : (. I would take a higher dose as long as I don't cause myself harm.
BTW I read a recent article in Health Magazine that Kava Kava has been shown to cause liver damage.

I've been taking 5-HTP for alot longer than 3 months and it is still definitely working for me.
If they can put people on AD's ie. Seroxat/Paxil etc. indefinitely, I personally don't feel any concerns about taking 5-HTP for long periods, as long as it keeps helping me, which it is.
Because the big companies can't patent 5-HTP and make mega bucks, you will find that there hasn't been as many trials/tests etc. carried out due to lack of funds. I think this is why some people treat 5-HTP with more caution. After the suffering I went through before and after taking Seroxat/Paxil, 5-HTP has been a godsend for me and I will keep taking it until I feel well enough to stop.

*Big warning about Depression and brain chemistry*
If you drink caffeine, especially coffee, you are going to have your serotonin levels cut dramatically and no amount of perscription, SJW or 5-htp will help. Caffeine is a chemical antagonists to serotonin. So if you drink caffeine in any form get off it now. I recommend the book Caffeine Blues (amazon.com). Also, SJW and 5-htp work great together and both are considered very safe.
