"Serotonin Levels???" , Fri 17 May 03:25

Before starting 5-htp would it be wise to have your serotonin levels checked to see if your level is out of wack?

Or doesn't it matter? Will this hurt a person who's levels are just fine to add to them?

I have been reading different sites about 5-htp and it states that it helps your serotonin. But has anyone been tested to see if they have a low serotonin level before taking the 5-htp?

For me I have had anxiety, and ocd attacks.. But that came from talking with my therapist and giving her my symptoms and her telling me what I have experienced. But no one has ever done a serotonin level check. She had me go to my regular doctor and have my hormones check to make sure they were not out of wack, and that came back just fine.

I guess my main concern here is, is it bad to have to much serotonin in your system? And could that cause more problems in different areas? Has anyone ever checked their levels out by a blood test?

I have had such a bad experience with the perscription drugs that I get a bit up tight when starting something new, even though people say there are no side effects, I usually have some kind of reaction. And I really need something to help me out here and 5-htp sounds just great for what I need without any side effects, just wondering about to much or to little serotonin in my system..

Thanks for your help..

Yes, you can be tested for serotonin levels, etc via a urine test. I just got my results back and I have VERY Little Serotonin. I had not taken 5-HTP before testing. I have heard that too much serotonin can also cause depression, but I'm not for certain. I hope this will help you and others. I have suffered from anxiety attacks and depression for several years. I've taken just about every kind of anti-depressant with not much luck - the best one for me was Effexor XR. I am thankful to have found a doctor that does brain chemical testing.

God Bless!

I dont believe that 5HTP gets converted to Serotonin in your blood stream. I think i remember reading that 5HTP crosses into your brain thru the Blood Brain Barrier (BBB) and there it gets converted to serotonin. There is NO Test that will tell u WHICH
neurotransmiter is deficient. Given your history of obessive compulsive behaviour, it seems its related to serotonin because SSRIs like Prozac are highly effective.
If a SSRI (Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Luvox, Celexa, etc) have been effective in curing your symptoms , then it seems that serotonin deficiency is your problem.

Celexa and Paxil were very effective for my depression but I had terrible sexual side effects, so I had to discontinue.
