"Need some help..." , Mon 13 May 19:33

Hello... I'm new here and I have a few questions..

I have tried a few medications, and they just don't seem to work for me.. I always end up with most of the side effects, and when that happens I stop the drug that fast because I can't handle the side effects. So I wanted to try something natural without side effects, but I have a few quesitons..

I started sjw a week ago and I haven't noticed any difference yet but I know that's normal it takes time to get in your system... But after reading more and more from this site I have noticed that alot of people perfer 5htp over the sjw, so now I'm wondering if I should try the 5htp?

I have a mild case of depression, along with anxiety, and was also told I might have OCD but without the C, and because I have such a reaction to perscription medication that maybe I should try the natural, but I want to see what is the most perferred..

My thearpist told me that from what she knows 5htp is used for sleeping, and I do need something for sleeping but I also need something for during the day, does 5htp help for during the day as well as for sleeping? And I have also noticed that some people take l-tyrosine along with their 5htp, what is the l-tyrosine use for?

After reading about sjw I found out that you need to take it during the day at first, until it gets in your system. Is this the same for 5htp? Do I need to take it during the day before trying to use it for sleeping? And do I need to use l-tyrosine along with the 5htp..

I have read what was said about the 5htp on their web site, and I see that it helps with most of what I have.. But I just need to know which one is better, or which one will start working the fastest?

And how do you take it? I understand that I will have to see which dose is best for me..

I currently take Xanax at night time to help with the sleeping but it doesn't seem to work anymore, I figure since I have been on it for 3 years that I probably need a stronger dose which my doctor doesn't think he should give me. So that's another reason that I want to try these natural med's..

Any suggestions or help that you could give me, would be greatly appreciated...

Thank You...

From what I have seen the trend seems to be that sjw works great for mild depression, and 5htp alone or in combination with some of the other treatments like sjw, sam-e & tyrosine work for moderate to sever depression. Also if you have allergies 5htp works without allergic reactions.

5htp will help with depression/anxiety/ocd/sleep. Since you are already taking sjw I suggest you stay with it and add 5htp later in the day. For me it works best if I take it around 3 pm, for others just before bed you'll have to try it and see. But first wean yourself off the xanax.

Thanks for your reply...
But I have another question maybe you could answer..

You say to wean myself off the xanax if I take the 5htp, is there a reason for this?

I don't know much about the 5htp, so I was wonder if taking both the xanax and the 5htp would cause a problem?

Thanks again for your help?

If you take xanax at night to help you sleep, and it doesn't seem to be working, why continue? The 5htp will help you sleep, and with anxiety. Xanax is addictive and you need to wean yourself off so the withdrawals will be less noticeable (you probably still feel like poop). I don't think I would recommend taking the 5htp and xanax together, anyone else?

Hi DuPont, It's eurydice, you helped me with 5-HTP at another board recently.(At least I think you're the same person!?) I was reading this thread with interest as I too take xanax. The reason is, I've started to have breathing problems and they figure it's anxiety, so I've had to take it everyday lately. Yersterday, I started 5-HTP for depression. I think my serotonin levels are low. I took 50mg in the afternoon and then another 50 at night. So I too was wondering about taking 5-HTP with xanax. If I can't breathe, I have to take the xanax. I didn't notice any bad effects yesterday, but I would like to know if there would be a problem taking xanax and 5_HTP together. I seemed to fall asleep pretty good without taking a sedative-that impressed me. I had taken the xanax early in the day.

Hi, eurydice
I noticed on the LC forum that you were taking xanax and the 5htp. I did a little reseach and found that xanax works on dopamine neurotransmitters and 5htp serotonin. So...I would conclude that you should not have a problem taking them both and you should be feeling pretty good since they both work on the feel good neurotransmitters. Maybe taking the xanax in the morning and 100mg of 5htp in the evening is a good idea?

I would be concerned about the xanax because it is very addictive. When you decide to stop taking it, do so slowly. A combination of sjw and 5htp seems to work well for the combination of anxiety and depresssion.

Thanks for the info DuPont. Yes, I'm concerned about the xanax as well. I do not want to go through withdrawl.I just want to be well. I'm so sick of this. Thankyou for your research I appreciate it.
