Topic Title: Does 5-HTP still contain peak X? + Epyx Q

I was researching 5HTP when I came across an FDA report. According to a 1998 report filed by the FDA, found here,
http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/ANSWERS/ANS00891.html
5HTP contains low amounts of this impurity. I am aware of the EMS outbreak that occurred during the 80's - but I figured that in the last 10 years makes of 5-HTP had removed the same impurity found in L-Tryptophan.
It also seems a little coincidental that the FDA released this report (August 31, 1998) shortly after, in 1998, that Prime Time Live ran a report on how 5-HTP is becoming more popular and being used as an alternative to Prozac (story ran in June/July 1998).
Has this discussion already taken place here?
Epyx - did you not once post some links that discounted the L-Tryptophan scare and the 5-HTP scare? I read that the reason 5-HTP has not caused more EMS outbreaks is due to the fact it only contains small amounts of peak X and is safe in minimal doses.

Yeah Gleake, I did. The "Peak X" scare of 1998 was just that -- a scare. There was never any merit to it. That's why there are no reports of it after 1998!
The Peak X in L-Tryptophan in the 1989 incident was amplified by poor filtration techniques, however the FDA banned all OTC (over the counter) sales from that point on.

After that report I called Nature's way, and they assured me that all their 5htp is pure, and screened for many impurities including peak x, and that their brand of 5htp is peak x free.
I would think that most of the reputable vitamin and herb manufactures would screen for impurities. Especially after those reports.
