"5-HTP" , Fri 22 Mar 01:47

Hi can anyone out there help me I suffer from panic attacks/anxiety I have tries everything Prozac, seroxat,Lustral,Chinese medicine, psychiatrists, CBT,HYPNOTHERAPY, Kava Kava the list goes on and on

Any way I have been reading up about 5-htp and liked what I saw so I tried it started on a Friday 50mg, Saturday 50mg, Sunday 50MG I then went to work Monday and had to leave due to the worse panic attack I have had (it was like the extreme panic attacks you have when you first use Prozac)anyway Monday I took 25MG same thing happened at work on Tuesday so I went down to 12MG but same thing happened Wednesday so I have now stopped them.
Can anyone tell me if they have had good results on only a few mg of 5-htp and when will these horrible side effects stop???

"Re(1):5-HTP/Panic and Anxiety Disorders" , Mon 14 Apr 00:28

Hi, I just came across this discussion form and read your question about panic and anxiety and was wondering if you have found any answers and/or cures? The disorder also affects my stomach and I feel nauseous or sick most of the time. I am currently on Buspar (since Jan 03)for my panic attacks and it doesn't seem to be working very well. My friend just gave me som 5HTP and I've been looking for information on it. I would prefer to take a vitamin or natural pill rather than a chemical one but, I'm willing to try anything now. I've had this panic problem for almost 3 years now and I really avoid almost everything. I even work from home. I don't leave the house unless I really really have to. Pleas help if you have any suggestions.

Hiya Wendy,

Gosh hun, sounds as though things have been pretty rotten for you.

I don't know if I am saying the right thing or not but have you considered INCREASING your dosage. Maybe 50mg just isn't enough. A higher dose might kick in better giving you more of a calming effect than just 50mg.

When on Prozac I too had heightend anxiety/panic attacks and so I had to stop taking it and was put on Seroxat. I still had anxiety/panic attacks initially but when my doctor increased my dose from 20mg to 30mg they stopped.

Again, I am not sure if I am making the right suggestion, it's just a thought.

I used to take 300mg of 5-HTP but found it started to make me feel too tired and so reduced to 150mg - 200mg which seems to suit me.

Hope you get something sorted Wendy.

Will be thinking about you.

Cheers

Nicky.

Nicky

Thanks for replying you don't know how reassuring it is to know someone out there is experiencing some problems like myself.
The higher doseage you are taking is that all in one dose or do I spread it out during the day.... did taking a higher dose give you any initial feelings of anxiety as I feel a bit scared about taking it because if a small dose gave me such severe attacks wouldn't a higher dose bring it on worse....???

Hiya Wendy,

I am certainly no expert when it comes to 5-HTP and it has only been through trial and error that I have managed to find what works for me.

I don't know if DUPONT would be able to give you more information or advise you better than I, as she has had more experience of taking 5-HTP.

I take 150mg-200mg of 5-HTP before I go to bed and then I take 1000mg of L-Tyrosine in the morning before breakfast which I have found to be a good combination.

I can remember reading a posting from someone who suffered from anxiety that they found that it worked for them by taking 100mg morning, noon and night. I guess we are all different and different ways work for each individual.

I can certainly understand your fear when you are making your last comments in your posting, but in all honesty I couldn't give you the answer because I just don't know. The only comment I could make is that I have felt the odd pang of anxiety whilst been on this lower dose of 5-HTP as opposed to when I took 300mg. But it has only been a pang and one that I have found OK coping with.

I guess maybe if you felt you wanted to try upping your dosage then the weekend would be a better time to try.

I am sorry that I can't be of more help.

It maybe worth seeing if there is any info. on the WWW that might help you with this decision.

Fingers crossed for you Wendy.

Cheers

Nicky.
