Hi guys
Wondered if any of you could help me on this. I've been taking 5-htp for a month now with some success, generally less anxious and sleeping a lot better too.
However I've started getting pimples during this time and this is something i've NEVER experienced before. I am 30 years old (so should be past all this) - the pimples are not severe but new ones do seem to be forming all the time.
I was wondering if this is a common side effect

Hi,
I've read some info on this. I'm a grad student in medical pharmacology at the Univ. of Arizona, and have had a similar experience as you. If your 5-HTP supplement has Vitamin B6 in it, which many do...anything more than probably 20mg/day, could
actually induce acne pimples. Strange that a vitamin which is basically non-toxic and extremely water soluble and easily excreted, would have such an effect, but it does...at least in some people. Me too!
My doctor thinks I may be allergic to the fillers in the brand I am using. He instructed me to try a different brand.

Thanks for that ..... I thought I was going mad!
However I'm not sure what could be causing it? My tablets also contain folic acid, vit B6, niacin and zince aswell as 5-htp

The different fillers could be yeast, gelatin, starch or preservatives or other additives that you could be allergic to. He wasn't speaking of the the additional vitamins or minerals that are combined with 5htp.

Hiya
5-HTP has worked very well for me over the last month or so - principally I'm sleeping a lot better than ever.
However I've started getting pimples/rash also. I'm wondering if this is connected to the 5-htp as I've never had pimples before (I'm 30!). Inititally it wasn't much of a problem but this last week things have got worse.
Dupont - I know you've been on 5-htp for a long time (and at higher doses than me). Have you ever experienced more pimples/rash while on it or heard of anyone else?
What a dilemma - to sleep or to have a clear face! Why not both?

No-no rash or pimples. I use Nature's way brand with c and b6.

Hey Dupont:
I think it must be more of a female thing with all of the hormones involved. Isn't 5-htp a hormone itself?

There must be a connection between 5-htp and acne/pimples. I don't want to stop taking it (as I am sleeping so much better) but these pimples are getting me down.
When I took SJW I didn't get the same problem, so it must be because 5-htp is actually a hormone whereas SJW just prevents the uptake of serotonin

5-HTP is not a hormone. It's an amino acid which happens to be the precursor of serotonin.
What you guys have written about 5-HTP and acne is news to me, but I had a look on Usenet and sure enough, a couple of other people have reported exactly the same connection. Sounds like you have uncovered a real side-effect though.

Hi Simonea, Usenet is actually the name given to the system of newsgroups that have been in existence virtually since the Net came about. More than 70,000 messages a day are written there!
The messages get archived at Google Groups. Type in a search term like
5-HTP acne
and you will get a whole bunch of hits, most of them irrelevant. But there's a couple of messages in there where people specifically mentioned the connection e.g. here.
