Hello. How long have you been on Tryptophan? What strength are you on and form? I'm taking 500gm. of powder form a day.(hate mixing it in juice and smashing out all the lumps.
I'm just curious what dose others are taking with good results. Thanks. Pauline

Vegan, I'm really interested in hearing more about L-tryptophan. What sort of effects do you get from it?

hi, I'm sorry it took so long to reply - I didn't realize you had addressed a question to me about l-tryptophan! I have been taking it at nite lately and sometimes during the day. I find that it totally relaxes me and it doesn't upset my stomach at all, which was the problem I had with 5-HTP. I had wondered whether it was a problem to take 5-htp having had an ulcer many years ago and nobody seemed to know the answer. Then, I saw a warning on the back of a bottle of 5-htp that clearly stated not to take it if you have an ulcer! So, that explained why it was SO upsetting to my stomach (more so than most). I have been experimenting trying to find the right dosage of l-tryptophan and would like to take it during the day too but don't want to feel drowsy and unclear in my head - as i"m in school and have to be alert. So far, taking it at nite has been so helpful with my sleep (I pretty much fall right to sleep) and with back pain I was having (it literally disappears when I take it). If there's anything else I can answer - let me know. Of course, I'd love to hear from others taking L-trypotophan for anxiety too - as that is what I hope it will help me with. thanks

RE; Tryptopan
My doctor has me on tryptopan, taking 1/2 teaspoon only in the morning. He said to mix it with alittle juice and not to take it with food, as it is an amino acid.
You take yours at night, huh? How much do you take.
Is yours in a powder form too? Thanks, Pauline

Are you still on Tryptophan? I saw an old post of yours. I've been on HTP.Calm and SAM-e with minimal to moderate success. My main symptoms is "anxiety" And this works well for your anxiety? HTP.5 does upset my stomach. Thanks, Pauline

Vegan, thanks for the reply. I've been noticing how frequently 5-HTP seems to result in gastric upset, which makes me reluctant to take it. In contrast, L-tryptophan enjoyed a long and successful track record in treating insomnia and depression during the 80s.
I would love to find it in Australia, but I think that is going to be incredibly hard. If I order 180 caps from the BIOS site, it will cost me over AU$1.00/500mg, which puts it out of reach for me.
You mentioned you've been experimenting with dosages. How much are you taking each day?

Hey Epyx,
Good news, I've been able to find l-tryptophan for $13.00 100 captules at 95mg. It is from Golden Globe which is an Australian company.
Their web site is http://www.goldenglow.com.au
I don't not what dosages I'm going to be using yet.
I will be taking it for fibromyalgia.
Good luck.

Misch, thank you! What a great find. It looks like the right stuff. Wonder where they are getting it from?

DuPont, the OTC ban applies only to human L-tryptophan. A nice loophole is that you can still buy it through veterinary suppliers, which is how the link above gets around it.
I wonder if this trick would work in Australia?

Hello EPYX; So, do you get your Tryptophan from a veterinary supply place, like a few others have? I'm just concerned about the purity and quality from a place like this? Presently, I'm getting mine in a powder form from my naturopathic doctor at $40 for just less than 2 ounces....taking 1/2 tsp. a day (which is 500mg.) I'd like to find a cheaper source, but still question the quality from a veterinary outlet. Can you console me on why you find this to be a reputible source? Thanks, Pauline

Epyx, I asked for L-Trytophan in few stores and in one of them i managed to get Proxan which cost 44 Australian dollars ( I know it is too much). It contains 30 capules of 5-Hdroxytryptophan , Vitamin B12 , Folic Acid ,Potassium and Magnesium.

Yeah, that's pretty pricey, but then again it's nearly impossible to find this stuff anywhere in Oz! It should be noted that Proxan is 5-HTP, not L-Tryptophan. At this kind of price, it's probably cheaper to buy it on the Net from the US.

thanks for all your responses. I am still taking l-tryptophan successfully at nite. It is really easy to getit also by prescription. I went to a naturopathic doctor here in Massachusetts and he gave me a prescription for it and I can get as many renewals as I want. Also, the place I get it from guarantees that it is free from contaiminants. I do find it helps me sleep and takes away any back pain but I still have not found it to be entirely helpful with anxiety (I felt the same about 5-htp). If I take too much I get sleepy so I don't. Has anyone tried gaba with l-trypotphan or 5-htp? thanks
