Hiya Sarah Jane,
How was your withdrawal from Seroxat? I suffered depression and anxiety/panic and I took 30mg Seroxat for 11 months but I found the whole experience a hard one including a nightnare of withdrawl. I was left for quite a few months with undescrible feelings. I went from feeling like robot to being like a raving looney. I went though thoughts of suicide, I felt so much anger it seemed unreal. This carried on for a couple of months after withdrawal. I did eventually level off but honestly, what an unbelieveable nightmare it was and it took me quite a few more months to feel even remotely 'normal', so hang there hunny, things will improve. 8 years is a long to be taking Seroxat so I am sure that the likely hood of the way you are feeling is down to withdrawal and NOT that you are ill again. Give yourself time.
I do know a lady that is intending on incorporating the use of a low dose of 5-HTP whilst she is withdrawing from Seroxat. This is with the approval of her GP and her practicing herbal specialist.
I have never tried SJW because I found that 5-HTP has helped me alot. It has taken some time to sort out what dose to take and when but...... I feel that I am getting there.
At the moment I am on 150mg of 5-HTP 30-40mins before bedtime and I take 200mg of L-tyrosin first thing in the morning.
So far so good.
I really do hope things sort themselves out for you Sarah Jane.
Cheers
Nicky.

Hello Nicky: Hope you don't mind me mailing you again. Just have a few questions. You mentioned you had a very bad time coming off the Serotex, and even once you were off it. Can you explain more? I just spent the past 2 months coming off Zoloft (same as Serotex) and have been off it for a week now and already started on 5-HTP, 50mg. a day. I just started taking 100mg. now, so been on this total of 4 days. I'm still having some mild anxiety and mild nauteousness. Is this normal? Is this still from just stopping the Zoloft and why is not the 5-HTP working for me? The Zoloft worked great for relieving depression and anxiety, but I felt I needed to get off it after being on it for almost 2 years, and also gaining weight on it. I've tried St. Johns wort a year ago, but it upset my stomach to much, so went back on Zoloft. So, now I'm hoping I will see some results for the 5-HTP. Do you take your HTP with food or on an empty stomach? Thank you. Pauline

JDRinger,
If you would like more information on withdrawal from SSRI's, you should check out website www.paxilprogress.org and click on "message centre". It's a real eye opener. I was on Paxil for 7 years, and stopped taking it 5 months ago. The withdrawal has been terrible, and I am still suffering withdrawal symptoms. After taking Paxil for 7 years, and suffering through dreadful withdrawal symptoms, my depression and axiety have returned full force. If it's a rebound effect or a return of the original depression and anxiety, I am not sure.
Good luck,
HLS

Hiya Pauline,
Gosh it would take me a couple of pages to tell you everything about my withdrawal so....I will just give you a quick sum up...
I was quite poorly when withdrawing, physically and mentally. Physically I was sick, my body was in pain all over, I was constantly hot and cold, nausia, the usual head zaps and painful headaches and no energy whatsover.
Mentally, this was the hardest to cope with and was not good all round. I knew that it was withdrawal causing this. It would take me too long Pauline to go into details, I'm sorry, but you do feel that you are being ill again but tenfold..... Things started sliding down the slippery slope and I knew I had to do something to survive, so I read up on so many alternatives that may possibly be of some help to me and keep me on a stronger footing..... that is where 5-HTP and L-Tyrosine came in (read up on the net about the combination of 5-HTP and L-Tyrosine).
The hardest thing I have found Pauline is to get the right doeseage. At first I didn't think 5-HTP was doing anything but helping me to sleep (I took 300mg before bed time), but after a month or so I realised that I was on an "even keel", and felt quite calm in control. I did start to feel too tired though and so I reduced my dosage to 150mg before I went to bed (I guess it must be on an empty stomach) and it seems to be working. I also take L-Tyrosine in the morning.
How long did it take the Zoloft to work for you? It took at least 4months before I felt any benefit from Seroxat whatsover.
It did creep up on me this feeling of been OK when taking 5-HTP. Give 5-HTP a little longer. You may need to try different dosage's or try taking it at different times of the day. I am afraid I am no expert regarding 5-HTP and have only learnt myself what suits me best through trial and error. But I will say stick at it Pauline. For me personally it has really been worth it!
I hope it works good for you too Pauline. Fingers crossed xxxx
Cheers
Nicky.

Just noticed your other questions - regarding taking 5-htp instead of SJW, I don't know what's best for you. For me, I took SJW and it helped with the depression but not at all with anxiety - but the 5-htp did (well now I"m taking l-trypothan by prescription because the 5-htp upset my stomach too much but it's almost the same thing). There are those on this board who take both SJW and 5-htp so you may at some point, want to try both if the SJW doesn't help the anxiety. It's always good to try one first then the other rather than both at the same time though, in case the SJW does help you with anxiety. It just didn't help me but as I said, it helped a lot with depression!

hi there, Usually when you start a new medication whether it be natural or not your body may feel on edge as it gets used to it. Also, did you stop your previous medication suddenely or did you wean off it? If you stopped it suddenely, then I can tell you that this is DEFINITELY a contributor to your feeling on edge. My advice is to wean off the old medication then start the SJW or your body will be totally out of balance and you will be feeling very bad. This happened to me when i suddenely went off Buspar one day to start taking 5-htp - I was a monster! So, I know how you feel. Even now, the 5-htp upsets my stomach so I have to take it with food or I get very grouchy. I hope this helps! Good luck, keep taking it one day at a time - you sound like you're on your way to recovery!
