"How long can you take 5-HTP for?" , Fri 8 Mar 10:09

Hi there

Just thought I'd update people on how I'm doing. After years of suffering from terrible insomnia (frequent awakenings, short sleep etc), I turned to 5-HTP a month ago. Almost immediately I started sleeping much better and now am getting between 7-8 hours a night. A miracle! Even more miraculous, sometimes I sleep straight through!

Obviously when you have suffered for a long time, there is always the worry of a relapse hanging in the background. I was wondering if it okay to take 5-HTP for more than a couple of months. I only take 50mg a day - even this has had a marked effect but I don't want to stop taking it when i feel so good.

Any advice

thanks

Melanie

Hiya Mel,

Well, I like you have had many, many years of not sleeping and I to turned to 5-HTP. I have been taking it for quite a few months now and it is still giving me the best sleeps I have ever had in my whole life.

I guess, the answer is to keep taking it if it works. I suppose you could take in alternate nights if you are worried that it may stop working for you and see what happens then.

So far things have been good for me. I still do have the odd 'blippy night', but they are far and few in between and I do know the reasons why I haven't slept. The following night makes up for it because I know that I will sleep good.

I can understand your worries Mel as I have the same ones, but so far so good.

ZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Cheers Nicky.

Nicky

Thanks for all the kind words of advice as I see you all too well understand the horrors of insomnia! I may try every other night but then again I am so pleased to be working well, having a social life etc (all due to sleeping) that I may just continue as I am.

I'm not on a large dose and the only side effect I do encounter is tiredness even with loads of sleep. But this is nowhere near as bad as the tiredness/emotional rollercoaster I experienced on no/little sleep!

Happy Dreams!!!!

Mel

Hiya Mel,

I did encounter tiredness myself during the day and after at bit it did get me down as I found it to be a little disabilitating ie. my mind was willing but not my body. I was at that point taking 300mg before I went to bed and 200mg of Tyrosine 1st thing in the morning. I reduced my doseage down to 150mg before I went to bed and it worked!! Any tiredness that I do get I find that if I get up to do something it passes pretty quick.

If you find your tiredness during the day to be a bit of a nuisance then maybe taking your 50mg alternate nights would be worth a try or maybe try combining 5-HTP with something that will give you a little more energy during the day. I feel that the L-Tyrosine is doing this for me and I have read that L-Tyrosine and 5-HTP do complement each other.

Hope things stay good for you.

Cheers

Nicky.

I sometimes worry about the long term effects of 5htp because I've been taking a rather high dose (500 mg/day) for over 2 years now. What I can tell you is I haven't had ANY adverse reactions. I am weaning myself off the 5htp (down to 300 mg/day) slowly, mostly because I want to make sure my serotonin levels stay up. It seems to be working.

Hiya DUPONT.

I personally feel that there are risks when taking ANY sort of medication long term. There are many products on the market that get prescribed by the medical profession that even they don't know the long term effects of. I think that going to your docs and asking them to check you out periodically is a good thing for people to do anyway. But if you do feel that it is niggling away at you in the back of your mind then go and get yourself checked out to put you mind at rest.

I guess the article further down the board has maybe unsettled you? 5-HTP has obviously been very good for you and has helped you to attain a good quality of well being.

I for one am so glad that I found it. I was originally prescribed 30mg of Paxil/Seroxat and believe me DUPONT the stuff nearly killed me!!!!!!!

As with everything you have to weigh things up.

There are so many people with good a knowledge, a good educational background into these products etc. that say 5-HTP is good. I must admit I haven't come across to many articles that have have said it is bad. For me the good outweighs the bad.

Hope things stay for you

Cheers

Nicky.
