The article mentioned in the other forum was written in 1996, I think we have more reliable information about the effects of 5htp now.

The post was actually copied from sci.med.nutrition (March 2002).

After searching Medline, 3 recent abstracts giving contradictory conclusions are :

So what do you think? Are you taking 5htp?

I emailed Dr. Steven B. Harris directly and he told me to stop taking 5htp immediately, and to go have an echo done on my heart. And if I don't do that to at least have a urine test done.

I'm still trying to decide what to do. Do I beleive this one doctor or all the other information that says 5htp is safe. I'm also in the process of weaning myself off of it any ways.

I don't know. Dr. Harris seemed concerned at the amount of 5htp I was taking daily (500 mg). His exact words were "Yikes! More than enough to be dangerous even if you convert only 10% to serotonin outside the brain".

The thing is there are no symptoms associated with this heart problem, and the only way to find out if you have it or not is to see your doctor.

I was completely undecided as to whether to start taking 5-HTP, but I may still try it since there have not actually been any confirmed cases of heart valve damage (yet!). I guess its a case of weighing up the potential benefits against the possibility of potential problems (if Dr Harris is correct) later.

Still undecided.....

Hiya Looper,

Thanks for the info. I do believe that you need to be aware of ALL the different information that is supplied on anything that you are taking.

To every bad thing you read about something you will always find another article that contradicts and visa versa. It is hard to know who/what is right and what it wrong because you will always find that these articles are ALL written by prominent and qualified people. At the end of the day I guess you have to weigh things up for yourself.

After 11 months of struggling on Seroxat/Paxil I find that 5-HTP has been great for me. I have had ups and downs and I am still in the process of finding a happy medium of what doseage suits me and when to take it, but on the whole it has really been good for me and I will keep taking it as long as is necessary.

Cheers again.

Nicky.
