"HTP Side Effects - Tiredness and Headaches!" , Sun 3 Mar 19:05

I have been on 5-htp for two weeks now. After about a week, I felt much more relaxed (much less anxiety) but started to develop intense headaches that would not go away. I was not sure if this was because I had stopped taking buspar or if 5-htp was causing this but decided it was buspar withdrawal probably and started back on a smaller (20mg day) dose of buspar along with the 5-htp. The headaches are still there but not as bad but I am EXTREMELY exhausted and I have started only taking 5-htp at nite (100mg) so I don't understand why I am so tired. IS anyone else experiencing this and does anyone know why I am feeling so exhausted all day (despite at least 8+ hours of sleep a nite)?

Thank you - I'd really appreciate hearing from someone!

Hi there,

Funny you should say about headaches. I have been on it for a month now, and had a terrible 3 days of headaches - still feel pretty rotten. I don't normally get headaches.

I think there is a bug going around at the moment, and I am hoping it is that!!

Hiya,

5-HTP has been really good for me but..... I too, have started to feel VERY tired myself. I also take Tyrosine which I have upped my doseage because I read that it helped someone else to feel more awake and alert. Not sure if it is working though. My mind feels very active but my body doesn't seem to want to do anything but sit there. I have only just recently started to feel this way.

Last night I reduced my bedtime dose of 5-HTP from 300mg to 100mg to see if this combats my tiredness. I think that is the hardest thing with 5-HTP, knowing what dose and when is best for you to take it. I will keep trying out different doses and different times though, because I know I have benefitted from 5-HTP much more than I did Seroxat/Paxil.

Cheers

Nicky.

The tiredness will wear off with time. Try splitting up your dose to 2x/day. Instead of the Tyrosine, I suggest ginseng and gingko biloba. Ginseng will give you the energy you are looking for, and reduce cortisol levels associated with high stress/anxiety levels. The gingko keeps the mind sharp, concentration and alertness will be better.

Thank you for your reply it was much appreciated.

Just by reducing my dose I felt a little less tired as the day wore one. I will give it a little longer and see how I go.

I seem to have got it into my head that I need a reasonable doseage before I go to bed, to ensure that I sleep well. It is a real fear that I may not be able to sleep and this ritual for the moment is one that I need, daft as it may sound.

Many thanks Dupont.

How have you been feeling since reducing?

Cheers

Nicky.

I feel great, no depression. I'm still taking 150 mg 2x/day.
